Civil War Token???

I have someone in a thread on another forum asking about a civil war token.

Here is a picture of it.

I am not familiar with tokens of any sort, but this one looks a little too "shiny and new" to be genuine. Anyone else care to comment??

This Civil War token is Fuld # 1/391a. It is quite common and is rated an R-1.

The picture appears to be overexposed, which makes it hard to tell if the piece has been cleaned or not. If it has been cleaned it's worth $4 or $5. If it is original it was have a wholesale value of around $10.

This is part of the patriotic Civil War token series, which was issued anonymously. Therefore we don’t know who the “I” was who owned the bearer “1 cent.” The obverse design resembles the early U.S. gold coins that were issued from the mid 1790s to 1807. When this piece was new it was a shiny piece of red copper, which had a sort of golden look. That was one of many ways token issuers and merchants used to help these pieces gain acceptance.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
