Overcharged shipping charges

I sold an item on Ebay and I misestimated the shipping charges. I charged the buyer $9 too much. I went into Paypal and refunded the buyer the $9. Is this common for a seller to do, or am I a fool for sending a refund when the buyer clearly had the opportunity to recalculate the shipping costs and send me an email to question them? Any thoughts on what everyone does in this situation?

But doing so generates a lot of goodwill, ethically the right thing to do in my opinion, and would certainly make your buyers see you as a trader with integrity, one they can trust, and that can translate into more bids (and higher bids) in the future.

You did not have to, but your ethics are above most others and you're to be commended, IMO.
Too bad others are not quite as conscientious.
Some of the times when I've done that, I didn't give 'em a refund but I did throw in a freebie worth about as much as the overpayment.

If, however, you quoted "actual shipping charges" in the auction, you did what should have been done: not refunding the extra would be unethical.
Thank you for being honest...
