How to get a coin out of an anacs capsule.

This may disturb some people, but, I buy the coin, not the capsule it's in....I want to get this barber dime out of an ANACS capsule so that this BIG lump of cardboard can be taken off the coin, so no damage is done to it whatsoever. Anyone know how I can get this coin out and save it?

I've used a small saw to cut the edge of the top off and then pry it open CAREFULLY with a screwdriver.

A "C" clamp works very well to crack slabs, better then a hammer I believe.

  • Thanks guys, I got it open finally with a small pocket knife, I carefull got the piece of particle off of the coin, and placed in a 2x2 to put in my folder, I inspected the particle closer, sure enough cardboard....I wish grading services would be carefull about that sort of thing, even if it was on the coin to begin with, nothing wrong with taking carefull care in getting something off a coin that isn't bonded to it...

ANACS inserts are not cardboard--they're rubberish/plasticy... the only thing close to cardboard is the label, which is paper.

I tried the bench vise method once. My friend said that I should wear safety glasses, seconds later a piece of plastic exploded off and hit him in the eyeimage-----------------BigE

put in vise, increase pressure slowly, and i do mean slowly, untill ya hear the crack, rotate 90 degrees and repeat,if required rotate 90 degrees and repeat !

If it wont crank on the first try,tap the vise with a hammer, the shock will make it crack sometimes.

Yes, I've used it on every slab, and it works much like a vise. It's a good alternative if you live in a place where setting up a vise is a problem.

The bench vise judiciously applied is excellent. Side cutting pliers ala the "paper" dolls work too!

I cracked a bunch of ANACS slabs by taking a pair of pliers and pinching the slab at the joint below the insert. Once you get a crack to travel across the full width of the holder, you can pull the top off and CAREFULLY slide out the white insert with the coin. I wouldn't do this if the coin isn't centered front-to-back in the holder, though, as it could rub against the inside of the slab. On a couple I had a harder time getting the coin out of the white insert than I had getting the insert out of the clear slab.

From what I read, TNT seems to be the best method for cracking out SEGS slabs.
