They got burnt. Theres pits on both sides and the colors don't look natural.
Now that I look at it some more, the pits on the obv and rev correspond. Probably where the tongs held the coin while the seller torched it to bring out the colors.

There was someone yesterday with a few identical busts that looked similar to this, and the auction was stating it was an estate buy on both accounts. Definitely the work of a torch or something similar.
