My boys, as I have mentioned here before have gotten more and more interested in numismatics as they see me spend more time with the hobby. Recently my 12yr old (Sean) told me his best friend (Cody) has some "old coins" in a small cardboard box at his house. I told him to bring them by sometime and we'd see what he has. Well, they were bored today and decided to go get the box and have me look at it.
The U.S. coins are common date SBA's and Kennedy's. Nothing special there. But then I pulled out some older coins from the darkside which were interesting. Since I know nothing about world coins I posted pics over on the World and Ancient Coins Forum and Hookedoncoins was gracious enough to ID them for us. His little cardboard box had a nice 1909 Denmark 2 0re in F-EF, a 1947 New Zealand 1 shilling in XF, a 1933 Panama 1/10 Balboa in AG and a 1960 Mexico one peso in VF-XF. Not the find of the century by any means but valued at upwards of $50 which is a lot for an 11 yr old kid. They are now sitting here looking at my coins asking a bunch of questions. Cody called his parents to tell them "how much these old coins are worth." It is nice to see kids excited about something other than video games and TV shows. Now they are going through the change jar in the kitchen...don't have the heart to tell them I searched that long ago
By the way, it turns out that these world coins were given to Cody by "some old lady who wanted him to have them." I'll bet you dollars to donuts that little lady was a collector trying to spread interest in the hobby to a little boy. I wish i knew who she was to let her know she succeeded.

<< <i>Might I suggest you occasionally seed the change jar so they have a nice find every once in a while

A lot of dealers, especially the smaller, more local dealers, will have binders of raw coins in 2x2s, and most of these types of coins are only a couple bucks... so easy to find say maybe a War Nickel, or a Roosy or Merc or even Barber Dime... a circ IHC or two, that sort of thing... they'll only cost you a couple bucks each...

I would love to take the boys to Long Beach with me but they are in school starting Tuesday and I have to give a seminar on Saturday
I may take them to one of the monthly shows soon though
