Two more coins I need identified (large pics)

Here are the other two coins my son's friend brought over. I'm trying to get his interest going in coins and he is coming around. These were given to him "by an old lady who wanted me to have them" he said.

    KM# 9a - New Zealand 1947 - 1 shilling - $1.50 (F), $3.00 (VF), $30.00 (XF)
    KM#12.1 - Panama 1933 - 1/2 Balboa - $4.00 (F),

I wasn't for sure on the second coin since Panama has identical coins of different size for each denom. I assume (based on the size of the NZ coin) that it is a 1/2 Balboa.
  • Thanks hooked. since I'm still learning grading how would you grade these?

The Panama coin is almost the same size as a Roosie dime. the NZ is the size of a Washington quarter.

If this is the case, the second coin is actually a:

    KM#10.1 1/10 Balboa - $6.50 (F), $12.50 (VF), $35.00 (XF)

Additional Note: the mintage for this coin is relatively low (100,000 minted).

As for condition... I'm not the greatest grader in the world, but I would say the 1/10 Balboa is AG (G at best) and the NZ Shilling is VF/XF. The krause prices only show Fine and above, however, so you have to make an educated guess as to how much the 1/10 balboa worth.
  • He is happy image I think we may have another YN on the hook! My son is already hooked which is why he was able to convince his friend to bring his little cardboard box of coins over. He will leave with them all identified and in their own 2X2's

    Thanks once again.

    Glad to help out.image

I hope your son's friend decides to join the hobby. Its always nice to see new YNs.
  • The denomination of Panama coins aren't hard to determine as its written right on the coin (in Spanish).
Un Decimo de Balboa = one tenth of a Balboa
    Un Quarto = one fourth
    Medio = Half

The NZ shilling is probably in VF or F-VF condition while the Panama is only Fair, worth only its silver value of .072 ounce.

I should have realized that, considering I know Spanish.
