I agree, that would make a nice display.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Capital plastics could make you a custom holder for them!

I like it, but I don't like seeing the 2X2's. I would suggust getting some construction paper and cutting out round holes, or little frames, (leave the coins in the 2X2's for protection)and putting the coins behind the paper. You could get creative on the paper, drawing little frames or-----? Have some fun with it and see what you can come up with!!!

  • have lots of construction paper, but how to make the round holes-have thought of this before but it's hard to get past the hole stumbling block...

  • You could put the set in Air-Tite holders. You could then cut holes into a piece of stained wood, painted cardboard, etc. I think Air-Tite might also be able to make custom cards as well.

Take a 2x2 and a razor blade cut out the mylar now take a pen and line out the hole on the back side of the construction paper. Then take the razor blade and cut out the round hole. then repeat with a 2x2 of each size you need

It's a clever set. Please post when you do settle on a display home for it.

Hey if you can get Capitol to do a special holder I'll buy one. That's a great set to hang on the wall of an office.

You can go to a custom framing shop. For one thing, mats are either ph balanced or 100% cotton now days. Your construction paper is acidic. I would not use it. Then again I work in a framing shop which uses strictly 100% cotton mats.
  • I would stay away from the construction paper, or any other materials or glues that are not designated as museum conservation quality. I would also put the coins in either air-tites, or my preference, kointains. I would probably also give them a preventative acetone rinse before encapsulation to try to stabalize the pristine surfaces.

  • What I probably can and will do is call Capitol...they basically make anything you ask them. This is not an expensive proposition with only 5 coins. The only question is layout. Sholud it just say Statue of Liberty(I guess at the top) or should it include the names of the coins:
    1986 Commemorative set
    2001 New York state quarter
Platinum bullion coin-(this last could have a variety of sizes, depending on how much you want to spend)
should the .1 oz be a standard since the others run expensive if Capitol looks to do a standard frame?

Actually, I think the 1/10 oz looks nice in this composition. You might want to go to 1/4, but I would go no larger.
  • Go to a frame shop and have them do a custom mat--just specify the diameter in MMs and placement.
    Curmudgeon in waiting!
  • I'm still amazed that I can get that shot down to an uploadable 49kb! sorry about the out-of-focus, it was a hand held shot!

Cool Idea for a set. I actually have them all. I would do air-tites and I am sure you could order either a wooden box or wooden frame from air-tite to accomodate the set.

If it were me, I wouldn't want to put the individual names of the coins (1986 commemorative etc) beneath the coin, I think a display like this works better with as few printed words as possible. About having it say "Statue of Liberty", this doesn't strike me as a great 'Title' either, it's too much to the point. I'm not great at coming up with Titles, but maybe something like "Views of Freedom", or "Lady Liberty" would be a better heading? Maybe you could start a poll for a good Title?

    Proof Set version:

<< <i>clad or silver on the NY??!!! >>

I'd go with the clad, since the others are coin silver already, the clad would be nice to showoff another 'variety'. Though, it would be handy to have a NY silver handy, to stick in the slot, see if for whatever reason the display looks nicer with it over the clad.

Just want to say cool idea on this group of coins, if/when you get around to calling Capital Plastics, you should do another post with what you're ordering and the $$, if enough others were interested, you could bulk order for cheaper maybe. I'd be interested to get the plastic and put this set together myself.
Varieties are the spice of a Type Set.

    Need more $$$ for coins?

not a coin, but here's a US Mint produced medal that would look good in the display. I've never seen this before, just popped out from a google search. Are there other mint produced medals featuring the statue of liberty?

They made that one in silver, too: Link -- probably a little bit more affordable than the gold one.

There's a dealer that sets up @ the Anaheim California show that makes custom display boxes/frames for coins/currency. I don't have his name but someone else who goes to Anaheim regularly might. I'm sure he can do a really nice display. All of his displays are made from hardwoods and have glass frames with velvet backing. He even adds pics to the displays. I'm sure he could do this with a great pic of the Statute in the center with the coins encircling it.

If anyone's interested let me know.
