Silver Eagle Proof 70 Spotting?

I've got this 2003 PR70DCAM SAE Proof..... What's with the spots? How can I remove or prevent these on my other SAE proofs?

Thanks!

Send it to HRH. I believe he is on record somewhere around here saying there should be no spotting on PR70DCAM. He will send you a check or a replacement.

David Hall. Yes, that one is definitely a grade guarantee candidate.

  • I would definately give back to Hall if he will take it. That is not a good looking PR70. It kills the eye appeal.
  • return it, they will replace or pay you. a $400+ coin should not even have one minor flaw. you have several. they'll treat you right

  • I don't think HRH will like me.

That's my SAE Proof set. I only need 2 coins in PR70DCAM (plus the 1995-W) to make 100% PR70DCAMs.......

I'd say about 1/2 of the coins have spots on them. None as bad as the 2003 pictured, but still spotted on both sides.

I don't really want money, I want a PR70DCAM without the spots.... image I bought a scanner today and am scanning the coins in for the registry set...... You'll see pictures update as they are scanned today.

Ben: As you know, I sell many PR70 Silver Eagles. Spotting is generally not an issue for the proof Silver Eagles, but, I understand, is a much larger issue for the MS Silver Eagles - which is likely why PCGS has not graded an MS70 Silver Eagle in many years now.

If you need a replacement coin on an 03 Silver Eagle for your collection just let me know or tell HRH in your discussions that I have one I have set aside for you, if that is one of your set coins.

  • Hey Mitch,

I also have 10 2004 SAE Proofs in 70DCAM....... 9 of them are spotted. Also have 6 2001's in 70DCAM, 6 of those are spotted.................

I don't think it's me causing the spots as they are stored in my office in an air conditioned room at 70(F)........

  • Many of my MS Eagles are showing spots now. Seems to be indemic to the type

That's probably a safe bet based upon your first quote. That's at least 15 coins @ $400 or so PCGS is going to have to buy back or replace.

    Good-luck.

    Ben,

That is a whole bunch of 70's you're talking about. Did you submit them all for grading or did you buy them already holdered. Just curious.image
  • Most of the problem coins I purchased from Teletrade. The others from other sources here and there.
