New QX3 Microscope.....just found something!!!!

Well I just got me new toy in after hearing about the QX3 Digital Blue Computer microscope image I decided to look at some coins under 60X magnification to see what I could see and after a few minutes of playing around I threw and uncirculated 1954-S Lincoln cent on the slide.

Right off the bat I noticed that the mint mark had some doubling too it. I thought it was most likely an RPM, but I had to check out coppercoins.com just to make sure.

So you take a look at the two images and let me know if you think I have attributed it correctly image

If you agree it's the same coin then I am now the owner of a:

1954S-1MM-002

CONECA cross reference : RPM#002
Wexler cross reference : WRPM-002

.....that I didn't know I had image

    Fun find.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

coppercoins.com lists an MS63 at $3.00 bucks and I am not sure what the price guides say for a 54-S, but I would imagine that pretty close to the normal book price. Very small markup, but still a nice find since I already owned the coin and wasn't aware it was an RPM.
  • hi
i would like to get one too.where did you get it at.if you don't mind me asking.?

    Hi Shane,
Very cool......I was looking at one of these a month or so ago. I never did end up getting it but.......
Can you experiment with lighting to get a more realistic color in the photo? Can this be done with the software?
For only what amounts to a couple bucks, this really looks to be quite a camera.
Are the magnification ranges variable ?
I don't mean to be such a hammer, but by owning this thing, you da man......

If you are interested in the microscope, you can find them on ebay.

  • Here is a link to a thread where the original discussion came up. It includes a link to the sight where I bought mine for $57 shipped. I do agree with BaronVonBaugh That they can be picked up easily on Ebay. I wanted a new one since I didn't want to take a chance on buying a new one that might have been dropped a few times.

    Microscope Discussion

As for lighting and other adjusment there are tons, but since I just got this thing hooked up tonight I don't have everything mastered yet. The magnifications available are 10X/60X/200X.......................that's it, but that still gives you a decent selection and one's that will allow you to save your eye site when looking for DD, RPM and other errors image
  • ok,thanks
  • Good catch.
The QX3 isn't all that bad actually. Glad your having fun.

    Thanks for the info Shane....
Good luck with that puppy !!

  • Certainly looks like a bona fide variety to me. image I just won an auction on a QX3 myself, and I can't wait to see what my coins look like up close. Cataloguing is going to be a cinch, too, since you can take photos with it, as well. image:

Here are a few more examples of the kind of pics you can get with this scope.

If you need a microscope to determine a variety it isn't going to be of much value.

I really like my QX-3! I bought it online from SAM's Club pretty cheap and it is great for taking pictures for E-bay auctions! I know there are nicer microscopes out there but for the money, it is hard to beat. I always use my loupes 10X and 15X first and then when I want to take pics, I use my QX-3. One modification I made to mine was cut off part of the plastic piece that surrounds the reflective light source.
I had to do this because some of the older thick NGC slabs that I had wouldn't allow for a clear image of the RPM's or other variety locations until I cut off part of the plastic piece. It didn't affect the lighting.

    Have Fun!!!

Looks like you hit the nail on the head with that find, there are other similar dies known, so it's a bit hard to attribute it from the image provided...but it at least looks right from here.

As to its value, an MS63 1954S Lincoln is worth about a quarter. The RPM in MS63 is a $3-$4 coin. That's quite a markup. In MS65 a normal 1954S Lincoln is worth about $2. The RPM in the same grade is a $6-$7 coin.

  • ahhhh gotcha....I thought the normal BU wheaties were worth a little more than 25 cents, but all I know is.....I'm not going to be able to retire yet image
  • Hmmmmm......How many pennies are in a lb.....approx 140?

I have about 165lbs of wheats

    165 x 140 =23,100 x .25 = $5775.00

cool.....I can almost afford to take a break

Your pricing works only if the coins are uncirculated, and then it wouldn't be a good idea to sell them by the bag or pound. If they are circulated you need to knock the quarter down to two or three cents. Also, there are 146-148 cents in a pound. Almost three full rolls.

    165 x 146 = 24,090 X .03 = $722.70

Not quite so fast on that break.

    i bought one of those qx3's ...

but i wasn't happy with the focus adjustment on it. (one slight move and you are clean off the coin)

fortunately for me....we have a dealer of microscopes here in indianapolis, couple that with my "need"
    to modify things...

    and voila!

my qx3 microscope head is mounted on a a professional microscope stand that has a stage that has coarse and very fine
up and down adjustment knobs...and the stage also moves latitude and longditude..called "x and y" positioning.

bought the stand used by itself for 30 bucks.
got me some model train layout "street lights" and a train transformer. about 20 bucks
    qx3 ...about 28 bucks.

    works great!....for ebay.

Ok, I bought one. Those of you that said you cut off the blue lip around the light.. do you mean the entire blue part that sticks out at the bottom end of the scope? If so, how did you cut it? It's made of hard plastic, and I don't think my pocket knife is going to do the trick. After it's cut, what about the little light that sticks out? It doesn't look like you can cut the plastic around the light part. Appreciate any help. Thanks.

  • They have cameras out there you can buy that attach to the eyepiece of any regular microscope and take photos through, if you feel uncomfortable looking at your coins through a kids toy.

Hi Flash and all who bought these!
I carefully used a sidecutter tool and file to remove part of the shroud from around the light.

Doesn't bother me a bit. As far as I can see, it works pretty good. I just can't get the lens close enough to the coin when using the highest power.

Don't have one yet. My guess would be to use a Dremel Tool and wear protective goggles while you do it.

    What else are you asking?

Hmm.. somehow I didn't see his answer. I swear it wasn't there until now! Thanks Leo! Unfortunately I don't own a sidecutter tool or a dremel, so I guess I'm out of luck.

  • I took wire gutter and cut the plastic and then wiggled it back and forth until the pieces broke off. It's not as pretty as leo's, but I was able to remove all of the plastic. I pair of plyars would also work just fine, it just won't be a smooth break.
