Can Anyone Tell Me How They Come Up With A Grade For This?

I mean, what's the criteria if there are no details on it? image

Oooops. Edited to add the link .

  • grade for what ?
  • Good question, only thing I could think of is that the planchet itself has very few hits in what would in essence be an "all field" coin (if I can create a phrase). Since there are no devices they would grade only on the mirrors and rim I guess. Am I close??
  • Not a trick question - I don't know the answer but what you said makes a lot of "cents" - to me. image
  • Better question is "why"?

  • Why would they grade a slug?

  • It is not a slug. Its a planchet. I agree a grade is silly. NGC just slabs them as Type 1 or 2 but no grade.

My guess is that they look at marks, scuffs, scratches or the abscence thereof.image

I think it's important for everybody to understand that when grading blank planchets, the imperfections that were caused before the coin wasn't struck are weighed less critically than those imperfections caused later.

coins can be graded by surface quality, but i totally completely agree that it is very stupid to grade most mint errors. i mean, how the he11 do you grade a capped-die brockage?

    & what does it MATTER???
