Registry sets by year instead of year and mintmark?

There are a lot of series that are possible to put together sets by year, but nearly impossible to do with all of the mintmarks. Seated dollars are one because of the 1870-S, where there are only a handful of specimens. Good idea? Bad idea?

I can't speak for doing registry sets this way (maybe, maybe not ... it would be tough to compare a set of the most common mint's for each year to a year set of better and key mints), but I've liked the idea for a long time.

Actually, I've been working on a one a year for a couple tough series, mostly the better or key mint for the year and series.

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

  • SOunds good. Theres also things like the 1916-D Mercury, which is tough to get in any grade higher than AG3 or the 1913-S Barber Quarter. Maybe a better idea might be to have registries that don't include the super keys, because it's pretty unfair that only the rich and famous who have access to these coins should have such an advantage over everyone else, who would literally drive themselves into bankruptcy if they broke down and bought one.
