Coin story... makes me mad...

Found a guy who was going to sell 10 GSA morgans at an antique store in about a week & 1/2 from the date I saw him (a Saturday). He's only open Tu, Th, Sat, Sun, so I asked when they'll be available. He says 2 weeks. I asked if I should come in on a Tuesday or Thursday. He said the weekend. I go there on Sunday (two weeks & a day from my first time there) and he says they all sold on Tues & Thurs. I was so annoyed and will never go there again. I had to make a special trip there for this and even though not far, out of my way.
Why lie? Guess he already found a buyer willing to pay big $$$$$

It sounds like you know the answer why, but he should have at least been honest and said he will be selling it to another person.

Yeah, it would have been nicer if the person had said they were already sold or give everyone a chance to purchase (or bid).

I think he said one person bought 2 and another bought 7, one last person got 1.

Somone recently offered 9 for $1500 on the BST. I thought about it for like an hour, and decided that would be a good price to pay, but they were gone pretty soon!

First you say he said they would be for sale in "about a week". Then you say he said 2 weeks and on the weekend.

So I take it he did not have them in hand and was anticipating getting them in?

If you have never been in there before and wanted some, you should have gotten his phone number or gave him yours and asked him to call you when they were available.

Otherwise, I don't think the owner would hold them for someone who stopped in his shop once. He probably figured it was too far out of your way to come back?

  • Why don't you buy them somewhere else? It's not like they're rare.

Or were you hoping to get a "good" price on them? Maybe a little below market valueimage

Or is it just because you had to make a special tripimage

I've had coins confirmed, put away for me by a local dealer....only to find that a friend of mine bought my coins the next day at $5 more per coin. I have since found at that this standard practice at this shop. I was sort of torqued off on a wonderfully clean and orig VF35+ 1853 half that was at $75. As nice a circ as I'd seen. My friend got it for $80.

If you don't walk out with the coins, they could get sold out from under you. Next time I'll get it in writing...but probably still won't matter.

To clarify: I did get his number. I did tell him I would be back. He was going to sell them at a fairly reasonable price. Other than ebay, I don't see them often in coin stores locally; when I do, they are sold quickly. I was going to jump on this opportunity. He didn't have them available the day I was there. He told me 2 weekends from the day I was there he would make them available. No sooner. I guess I was expecting him to honor what he said and start selling them on the weekend, not prior, as he said he wouldn't.

    Whatever. My loss.
