Anyone care to offer an opinion as to the value of this $20 Liberty?

Anyone care to offer an opinion as to the value of this $20 Liberty. It seems the guides are all over the place in this grade. Thanks for looking, Joe

Oddly enough I nailed the grade before scrolling down to see that you kindly provided it for me.

Bid/ask as a type coin would be $490/$530 for EF40, $650/$700 for AU50. Somewhere in the middle would be $550/$625

On the other hand, CW Coin Values shows 1862S in EF40 at $1450 and AU50 at $1825.

Since I don't collect or deal in gold, quoting you the guides is my best effort.

A couple of PCGS XF45 pieces have brought in the $950 range in recent Heritage sales and a couple of others have brought considerably (roughly double) more than that.

Unfortunately, I don't know how this one compares to those.

Check Heritage's prices realized on 1862-S $20's in EF-40 in their auction archives.

Numismedia's retail price of $1200 per their price guide is probably a little on the high side but it is not all that far off.

Yes, that's my dilemma. The guides seem to be all over the place. I have wanted this particular year and have this coin inbound but I am trying to find out if I grossly overpaid before my inspection period elapses.

Thank you for your thoughts, Joe.

That is about what I would have expected for that coin. Hard to tell the quality of that EF-45 (XF) coin.

He priced it a little high for an opening price but in the end, no one bid against you so you came out of it ok.

Never heard of the E-pray moniker but I like it!

All in all it sounds like it's in the ball park with regard to the spread between the guides then what Mark said. I think you're fine.

Secondly, I have a sneaking suspition that the photos provided don't quite do the coin justice. Gold is one of the most difficult to get photos of, and these don't look like the exception.

  • I thought the price was okay but I was only going from ebay auction realized prices. I have been watching that year and a vf25 went for $650; a vf30 went for $811; and, a vf53 went for $2,037.

Of course there is a NTC ms62 on there now for a $4,400 starting bid and a $17,000 buy it now price; but that coin scares me.

That exact same coin, and I mean exact as I compared slab # before the images were removed sold in July of this year on ebay for $1,576

Looking at auction history for this coin, it's possibly a little high but in the ballpark. Still, there don't seem to be too many distracting hits (as usually plague $20 gold), so maybe it was worth a stronger bid. If you like the coin when it arrives, it seems like a decent deal.

Although I haven't been in the market for a Type I double eagle for a while (since prices started moving up a year or two ago), I'd say, depending on how you like the coin, that you probably did OK.

According to the current Gray Sheet, wholesale Bid for an 1862-S in XF-40 is $560 and AU-50 is $1275, while retail Trends is $1825 for an XF-45.
