Is this possible? A doubled clash?

It looks like this strong reverse clash on this Roosevelt is doubled? Any opinions?

Yes, it's possible, and yes you have one...a nice one at that!

I had a 1943 cent with a tripled clash on the reverse, and somewhere around here I have a memorial with a doubled clash then another clash that's out of alignment on the obverse. I don't know what such coins would be worth, but I would have to doubt an error dealer would give you the time of day for one. Doesn't matter, they're still interesting.

The one on the left is a planchet issue as it runs under the design. The one on the right is a die gouge, not a clash.

I strongly disagree Jack. Look at this other rev clash and compare the two.

Looks like the real deal ... I have both a double, and a triple clash ... both 3c CN's

Now that I have a new camera, maybe I'll try to get a good picture of those, the triple is really kewl

I'm not so sure after seeing the second photo. At first glance, Yes, looks doubled. But, under R of AMERICA, they are in different locations
where they come out of the leaf.

Also, above PLU of PLURIBUS. What happened there? Clashes don't disappear.

Hi Frank, my experience has always been that on a clashed die, the design cut into the opposing die is not always even and does not always impart a complete design imprint, so a clash does not always show the entire design from the the other die. I don't think there is any doubt this is a clashed die, my question was if the clashing was doubled. I have never before seen a doubled clash.

Yes, these are double clash marks. Nothing unusual about that. You can find two, three, four, five and more sets of separate, staggered clash marks on coins. All it takes is for one of the dies (usually the hammer die) to shift position between each collision.

Occasionally you can find a very wide separation between one set and another, as the result of a misaligned die clash.

a double die-clash is very possible. you can easily find bust halves (1812, 1813, 1814) w/ at least 3 die clashes, & there are some 1865 3-cent nickels that have a quintuple die-clash (i myself own 1 that has a quadruple die clash).

    great question! kool coin too!!!

Here's one that I have. Not as impressive as the dime though. Above the left wing and to the side of the right wing.

  • JRocco,

You do have an excellent example of a die clash. The clash marks are doubled because the dies struck twice without a planchet between them. This happens in pretty much any denomination but not as often on moderns. For example, I have a 1886 VAM 1C morgan with 5 clashes noted. I haven't seen any coins with more than 5 clashes, they are usually spotted by then and the dies are fixed or replaced. If anybody has any good clash photos, this would be a good thread to start posting them.
