Those aren't easy to crack and reseal. I wonder if the set is going to just fall apart during mailing.

I like how he says they are proof, but then states the coins are MS60-65. Interesting.

Kind of cool. I'm doing the same thing but with a set from 1861, including gold. He clearly made a mistake calling it a proof set, but it could be a date set of mintstate coins from 1934.

He doesn't call it a proof set.

  • He doesn't call it a proof set???? The first line in his description says:

<< <i>This auction is for a proof set of 1934 coins consisting of the following: >>

This was directly copied from the listing.

This auction is for a proof set of 1934 coins consisting of the following

Okay, I didn't see that line. He does specifically say each coin is MS, he probably is under the mistaken belief that the plastic is the proof set.

Sure, I can see how someone could do that. Plastic wasn't even used in 1934, but hey not everyone can be a rocket scientist.

I don't think the listing was necessarily fraudulent. I wrote to the seller, who thanked me, sounded sincere and said he would notify bidders of the mistake.

It's also appears to be the first time this eBayer has been a seller instead of a buyer.

He does say in answer to questions askd that he did not intend to state that it was a proof set and that he wanted to change the description but a bid had already been placed so he couldn't. I told him that even though he can't change the description he can still add to it and make the correction that way. Now we get to see what he does.

He should simply cancel this auction. Any additions to it will likely not prevent it from selling for far more than it should.

IMHO, this seller is either very smart, or very stupid. In any case, the buyer is going to be very disappointed.image

Those aren't shiny enough to be proofs. I want them shined up before I'll bid.image

  • Yup, it's a rarity all right. Something you may never see again, so save those pics to your hard drive.

  • Well he was told how he could still make corrections to the auction even though he can't revise the description and he hasn't chosen to do so.

(Seller has now added the questions asked that make it clear that it is not a proof set)

    Hi,
I assume you mean in the storage of coins? Plastic was introduced long ago - the first man-made plastic was created by Alexander Parkes who publicly demonstrated it at the 1862 Great International Exhibition in London. "Modern" high grade acrylics were introduced in the 1930's.

  • Sorry, a little OT here.

Is this something new on eBay that the Q & A's are displayed on the auction page?

    Ron
  • It is new, and the seller I belive has the option as to whether or not they appear. They were not there earlier today and are now so he must have added them. Since he has added them and they clearly state his reasons i will retract the statment I made earlier that it was an intended scam.
