Anyone wanna help a new guy with info on getting his morgans slabbed? Warning - many images.

Hi longtime lurker new poster. I have what I believe is a nice set of morgans which I wish to get slabbed. Some are carson city gsa but the cases disappeared before I acquired them only the cards remain.

I don't know if I should send them all out, select some, should I send them all at the same time, send them piecemeal? If I send them all at once would I get a better rate? Any insight would be appreciated.

Please, coins are not for sale. Thank you, Joe.

I think the decision to slab or not is a personal one based on the value of the individual coins, your preference for raw vs. slabbed, the likelihood an unslabbed coin will be damaged, etc. As for cost, submitting all at once cuts down on postage, but that's about it. BTW, welcome to the boards.image
  • If it was me to do all over again,
I would join PCGS, that gets you four free gradings off the top.
Then pick four of your best to send in for the free gradings.
Next look to see which registry set you want to join.
Then submit enough dollars to get you to the 90% completion point in the registry set.
That nets you some more free gradings, from 1 to 5 depending on how many coins are in the set total.
Then send in some more Morgans for the free gradings you just got.
Then submit what's left over to get graded.
Of course you could do it all at once too. Technically, sending in larger batches of coins tend to save you on shipping to some extent.
But I consider that a minor issue.

  • image Beautiful coins. I slab all my Morgans with ANACS. They will discount for more
than 10 coins submitted at once. You may also have additional information such as the
VAM identification, etc. noted on the slab. I do this because there seems to be a fair sized
community collecting Morgan VAM variations and this enhances the coin's value. You will
get all the information you need at: www, anacs, com. Hope this helps. Great collection!

  • Thank you all for the helpful replies and the warm welcome.

Anyone wish to give an opinion as to where some of the better ones may come in at, grade wise?

    Thanks again, Joe

  • Nice Morgans!! IMO there are a couple of ways to proceed-- (1) decide which coins are worth the cost of slabbing. If the coin is worth $30 is it worth paying $15 to have it slabbed? So you end up deciding on a dollar value criterion, sending some and holding back some. (2) Decide that you want them all slabbed and choose one of the top TPGs e.g. PCGS, NGC or ANACS. I'm not sure about all TPGs on the issue of volume discounts--I do know that ANACS periodically runs specials--I had about 40 Morgan and Peace dollars slabbed several years ago on a $9/9 day special for a minimum of 9 coins--a very good deal. I personally like the look of matching holders.

Your 81cc and 84cc are very nice coins....especially the 81. Looks to be Deep mirrored...or at leat Proof like...(PL). Very nice collection!
  • I see some nice coins.

I would keep them i nthe album unless you plan on selling them. Easier to view and appreciate. Save those extra slabbing fees and add to your collection.
  • Jest: What "billboat" says is true. Only you can make the decision and often our coins don't
come back with the grades We would like. However, I slab all my Morgan Dollars.
I have paid $10.00 to have a $5.00 Morgan slabbed by ANACS. It's all a matter of personal
    choice.

  • If you want to sell them, then have them slabbed by PCGS.

If you want to learn about varieties (VAM's), then have ANACS slab and attribute them.

If you want the protection of a slab, then put them in Coin World plastic slabs.

If none of the above, then save your money and spend it on more coins.

These are some really nice Morgans...
Are you collecting or buying to sell?
Are you interested in a registry set or getting VAMs attributed?
It all depends on your preference.
I collect. I like to look at my coins. I try to purchase ANACS slabbed morgans for the VAM attributes and consistent grading in the 63-65 range, staying within my budget. Most of my Morgans are not yet slabbed, but may be some day. I'm seriously considering ANACS to slab my raw ones.

Good luck and welcome to the boards.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

Welcome to the forum. That 1881 CC is killer. Maybe a 65/66 PL?

    Very nice looking set!!

I actually inherited the set from my father. I haven't yet decided what to do with them. Getting them has rekindled my interest in coins but I think that I gravitate more to the $20 Liberty; I would also love to get an early bust dollar.

Thus, I am in limbo, the set is great but I think that my real interest lies elsewhere. That's why I am looking into slabbing as a first step to possible later sale. Again, I wish to thank everyone for their replies. I have learned so much in just a relatively short time reading this board.

  • You have a very nice collection. If you don't slab PCGS you are doing yourself and your collection a disservice. I like that you still have the certificates that came with the GSA's, but you really can't prove they go with the coins in question. If the GSA's were still encapsulated, I would have recommended they go to NGC as they will certify in the GSA holders.

If you join the PCGS collectors club as a platinum member, you will get 8 slabs for free. Otherwise, if you are in no particular hurry, you can get each certified for $16 plus S/H/I to and from PCGS.

PM me for more details, but I welcome you and state for the record that you have a very nice set that you should be proud to own. I love Morgans with the edge toning.

Def...slab the high grade coins. Sell em, and buy some coins you like. Im sure your father would rather you have coins you enjoy! Have fun! When you get them back, if you choose to sell em, place a few on the BST board. They is purrdy!

A word of warning. PCGS likes to bodybag Morgans for "altered surfaces" for no apparent reason sometimes. Therefor PCGS will never again see one of my Morgans. ANACS grades Morgans well and with ANACS, you will get your coins back before 2005.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Very nice set of coins....I am a little puzzeled by the grading system assigned below some of them....what the heck is a BU750 anyway image

As for grades.......nearly impossible to tell from looking at a distant scan of one side of the coin. I will say that most look to be in the MS63-MS65 range from what I can see.

The 1881 CC if stunning and if you certify no other coin......make sure you have that one graded!!! It looks like an MS66 and their is some nice frosty contrast between the divices and the fields so I would be shocked if it didn't come back at least (Proof Like) PL.........with a better scan we might even be able to say Deep Mirror Proof Like (DMPL), but those are next to impossible to find so don't start counting your millions yet image

Joe, you have a marvelous set of morgans. Looks like a true labor of love. By your post it seems you have already decided to have them slabbed. Raw or slabbed is a choice we all have to make for our collections.

Slabbing can be an expensive and upsetting process. Grading companies are somewhat inconsistent and it may take a few tries to get your coins in the correct slabs. I would recommend to anyone selling their collection to proceed with the process as slabbed coins can make the coins easier to sell. I would recommend either PCGS or NGC.

However, if you are not selling as stated above, why get them slabbed? I might recommend purchasing a classy high end Dansco or Intercept Shield album. Your raw collection would look stunning in one of those albums. Your coins will be adequately protected and can be easily viewed for enjoyment. Just some food for thought.

How does that work? I don't ever remember getting any offers for free grading either at 90% complete or 100% complete.
