Interesting Article in the Numismatic Sun

Has anyone read the article in ANR's Numismatic Sun magazine called "Frank's Piggybank"? It is an article about ANR staffer Frank Van Valen and the piggy bank of circulated coins that he keeps for fun. He does not have any incredible rarities in there, but it is an interesting collection of pieces and contains a variety of issues. Does anyone else do something like this? I was thinking of doing it for fun.

    didn't read the article.

i have a box at home simply entitled "goodies". been throwing coins (in flips) in there for years, with the commitment not to look in there or take anything back out until i'm 65.

  • Its a neat article and Frank likes to tell of his newest coins he bought for it when you meet him in person. I think its really neat and his selection of coins makes it interesting to everyone.

  • image Hi, all, and thanks for the recognition. It's a fun way to collect coins and it draws a lot of interest as well. My latest additions are a 1902-S Barber 10c in VF, a 1906-D Barber 10c in Fine, and a nice problem-free 1818 quarter in VG-10, oh-so-close to fine—picked this baby up in P'burgh at the ANA Convention courtesy of an old-time customer who read the article then presented me with the coin at our table (I paid mid-way between Gray Sheet VG and Fine bids, by the way). As an instructor at the annual ANA Summer Seminar ('02, '03, '04 so far) I teach collecting type coins, and the piggy bank (actually a barrel) makes for a good ice-breaker to show students that any budget and taste can be fun, as long as the coins are problem-free for their respective grades.

Yes, but I don't specifically buy coins for it. Instead, I use cool stuff that comes in "deals". Often, they're older foreign coins left over from large lots bought at auction. I don't even know what some of the stuff is. Like Dorkkarl, I'm not planning on touching the treasure chest until much later in life.
