My new camera is pretty neat. . .

I just got my new digital camera, and so far, it is looking really great.
It is a extra small Pentax Optio r4i, 4 megapixel camera. It actually fits with room to spare inside a nifty metal Altoids Mint container.
What is really neat is it has a macro and a super macro mode. Super macro lets you get to within 1.5 inches from a coin or other thing to take a photo.
It looks to have a nice anti-jitter capapbility as the photos at 1.5" away are pretty clear even when holding the camera in my shaky fingers.
As soon as I finish my new camera stand, I'll see how it works on the stand.
I stuffed in a 256mb SD flash memory stick and it can take up to 164 or so hi-res photos on it too, that's about equal to 5 rolls of 35mm 36 shot film.
Here is a couple of shots in Super Macro mode scaled down a little to fit on the screen better.
One a 1858 LL Flying Eagle Cent, two a shot of the extra tiny fine print on a Costco Coupon.

Crop the coin photo before you resize and you'll get more coin and less other stuff.

  • Sounds like a nice camera. Good pics. You might play with the "white balance" some to give a more natural lighting look. Not sure if your camera has the different settings based on different types of lighting ie: direct sun, flourescent, incandescent etc.. but it make a big difference in the photos outcome.
  • Yeah I am still feeling it out. Something like 2 million options and setting to try out still.
I thought about cropping the coin image, but I thought it was pretty cool how it captured the little rough dimpling effect on the slab, plus was still able
to focus Ok on the desk top below the sab too.

I've been looking at that camera for quite awhile, not for coins, for backpacking. I weighs in at 4 oz and fits in the palm of your hand. I knew it had a macro function but I never gave shooting coins a thought. It would be real cool if you could work out all the settings and PM me with them. If it works great with coins I will be buying one too. Thanks for letting me know.

Looks like it does nice shots. Can you show us a clad or silver coin?
