Best and worst coin web sites

Here is my opinion of the web sites of some of the major coin dealers:

1. Bowers & Merena-- just a plain mess; not very well organized and extremely cluttered.
2. Heritage-- tons of information, but way too cluttered on the opening page. Lots going on, but you need to look beyond the clutter.
3. ANR-- very clean and basis; very easy to use and navigate. Does nto have a ton of research info, but the articles by Bowers are great.
4. Pinnacle--good site with a lot of good articles; could be updated for a fresher look.
5. David Lawrence--pretty well laid out, except for the continual shameless promotions about the Richmond Collection.
6. Legend--extremely out of date and needs a serious overhaul in terms of its "look". Great market reports, though.

Anyone have any comments or other sites to review?

I think JJ Teaparty has one of the best websites in the biz...the opening page has a list down the left hand side that serves as a sort of menu of coin types and you just click on what type you would like to see inventory for. I also like the fact that they have fairly detailed descriptions and pretty decent pictures for most every coin. Just my opinion.
  • From the "worst site"...

    << <i>We'll come to you!
If you have a quantity of collectibles that you would like us to grade and authenticate for you, give us a call. We'll be glad to discuss the possibility of coming to your store or residence to grade your inventory.

I think their biggest problem is too many font colors, types, and sizes. It also takes a good eye for design to pull off using a black background. Airplanenut's sites are an example of how to do it well.

By far, my favorite coin site is this site! In every respect.

I like the Heritage auction records, too. Heritage has been quite useful to me.

I've used Cammy's site many times, it really is a great resource for slab generation.

Heritage gets the nod hands down due to their search feature, among other things. ANR takes wonderful photos and is off to a flying start, I hope they add a searchable database down the road and don't remove any of their archives. B&M's search function has been under construction forever.

Just the fact that you list Legend, Pinnacle and DL with these major houses says a lot about these dealers. But you really can't compare them as the same animal. All three have improved their image quality 10-fold over the past couple of years, especially Pinnacle & Legend, and what's more important than that to collectors? They surpass Heritage and B&M in that respect. But again, they have far less coins to image so it's not fair to compare them.
  • In terms of information and not critiquing web design, these I like:

As for the most annoying in the list, it`s this: http://overdate1.tripod.com/coinvarieties/index.html . The web design is outdated compared to what is out there now and has pop-ups. But, the information given is a good, quicky reference to coin varieties when you`re on line.

My favorite is Heritage, primarily for the auction archives.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - ANR, please add a searchable auction archive to your web site.

  • What about Superior? I don't see much, if any, mention of them. Their site is horrible and should take honors for worst.
Heritage is by far the best. Their imaging stinks, but the archives and other bells and whistles on their site puts them clearly in the lead. Their imaging is like Paul Hamm falling on his a$$ on the vault, but they still get the gold (although I hear that is still in dispute, Hamm's gold that is)

There are alot of good sites, but I have to say that I like David Lawrence's site the most.
    Second place goes to Heritage.
Third place is a tie with Pinnacle and JJ Teaparty.

  • Heritage has to be #1. There is no where else I can go to get a blizzard of accurate information. I love the fact I can just about do anything via that site!

#2 Legend. Say what you all want, their site is easy to use-and its fast. They really keep their site up date on inventory and Market Reports.

#3 ANR. Quick, clean, easy to use. I like reading their articles too.

I do not like David Lawrence's site-not layed out well to my tastes. Pinnacles is ok, I don't like their images.

Mike Printz does a super job with the Whitlow site. He has the absolute best pictures of inventory I have seen.

Heritage, OTOH, needs to take serious photography lessons.
