And which one would you rather have?

I think the 93-S is more popular, because people doing entire Morgan sets don't always include the 95 Proof.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I agree with Kranky. Many collectors believe that one can have a complete Morgan Dollar collection even if the 1895-P is missing. The argument is that it is a Proof only issue and not a business strike coin.

Now matter how high the price of the 1893-S gets, and it's really up there now (coins in Good are selling for $2,500+) the set is not complete without it.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

1893S is definitely going to be more popular. I'm not sure which I would rather have. A deep cameo 1895 might win out over a lustrous MS-65 for me.

Since so many people are sticking to one entre`, I'll go back for seconds.

I'll take the 93s first and for desert, gimme the 95.

I think the 93-S is more popular with more demand. Even so, the 95 proof is clearly more desirable.

1893-s is by far the more popular. that goes w/out saying since there aren't enough 1895s to make them "popular". but the 1895 is probably more in demand.

for me, i'd take the 1895 if i HAD to choose.

Rarity is only interesting if the coin is easily obtainable! For example, the 1909-S VDB Lincoln, easily bought in any number of venues, is popular, but the much more difficult 1909 proof Lincoln is not.

Norm, from 'Cheers' said it best about gambling, "It's more fun when there is no risk involved."

Rarity is more fun when it is easy to purchase. Coins that are tough or improbable to locate are not as much so for the average Collector.

With that preamble, I'd state the 93-S Morgan (easily bought, albeit expensive) is more "fun" than the difficult 1895 proof.

  • Personally, I'd rather have an 1893-s because it's much more interesting to wonder who's hands a coin has passed through rather than what display cases, which would be the case with the proof...

I think the 1895 is more popular. Everyone likes them, likes to see them and Ohh and Ahh over them. But the 1893-S is more in demand because EVERY Morgan dollar collector WANTS and hopes to someday be able to buy one. Only a few really plan on trying to actually buy the 1895. The 95 is so high priced that almost everyone writes it off.

Especially when a 95 in vf30 or PR30 or so could set you back about $25K.

    95 proof more valuable.

Forgot to add, although I'll probably never own either, I'd rather have the 95 proof. I've seen 93-S's in very common places (coin shops and small shows), but I've never even seen a 95 proof.

I think the 95 Proof is more popular and talked about more frequently as being the Morgan to own. However, I have never understood why so many people feel that they have to have the 95 Proof Morgan to have a complete set of morgans(excluding proofs) The 95 proof Morgan is really no rarer than the some of the other prrof years, just has the extreme popularity and demand becase of the unknown buisness strike 95-p's. Considering this coin is needed for a complete busisness strike set should be no different than the Proof only Shield nickels, or three center's, etc. I choose to own the 93-s becuase it is the key date in the standard Buisness strike set.

I would rather have the 1895 but only if it was given to me. They are like 1909S-VDb's, not that uncommon but way high-priced. My 1890 is less common, but 1/10 the price.

1893-s without a doubt. Now if one should come across one of the 12,000 or so 1895 business strikes that were mostlikely all melted, that would obviously be different. I have seriously collected Morgans and I have always focused on the business strikes and not the proofs so I am biased.
