Here's a popular 1804 1/2¢ C-6 (spiked chin) in the latest die state known! It has multple die cuds, which are popular with specialists (Lanny). The latest known die state (in Ron Manley's book) prior to the discovery of this coin does not have the die crack over the T in States.

Back when I was collecting half cents by die variety, this was NOT one of my favorites.

It's pretty common as a variety (R-2), but there were 16 die states of this thing listed in Breen. And too many collectors felt duty bound to find every darn one of them. As a result if you were a collector who only wanted ONE for a die variety set you had hard time finding a decent one. And you had to pay more than you should have when you located it because so many of them were impounded in die state collections.

It was once said that a cocaine addiction was God’s way of telling you that you were making too much money. Getting hung up on collecting this and other coins by die state in God’s way of telling you to take up an interest in collecting something else.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Very cool find. Collecting by die state is a tad esoteric for me, but still seeing a die about ready to fall apart is pretting interesting.

Holy Cow! What's keeping the reverse die together - Bondo and duct tape?
