Feuchtwanger Cent????

Anyone know anything about this trial composition coin? The local coin deal turned up with one dated 1837. He says it's a 3-D die variety with an R8 rating. From what he tells me it was a trial coin made by a private business for the US government to test nickle/copper composition. The design is very similiar to the F.E. patterns with the eagle flying up. It's an interesting story, but I'm not interested in pursuing the coin. However, I would like to verify the dealer's story as he has told a whopper or two before (although I think he believes them).

That is correct. I have one myself. There is a a short write-up on them in the back of the Redbook too.

The dealer wasn't pulling your leg about it being a private pattern. Feuchtwanger also made some three-cent pieces.

This book has a brief section on Feuchtwanger 1 & 3 cent pieces. It includes all known (and some unknown) die marriages and rarity ratings of each. These are unusual but not completely unheard of. They are in the Red Book also, by the way, which means they are not a total unknow to the mainstream community. Anyhow, here is the reference if anyone feels the need to read more:

i own several, as well as a 3-cent coin. the 3-cents are incredibly kool, but awful expensive.
