I learned a lot at Pitt..what did you learn?

I love to learn new stuff..as a relative unknown still I can do the fly on the wall thing pretty good still..some dealers are great they take the time others if they think you are gonna buy big from em... The guys who collect are so cool and fun to learn about a series I know nothing about..I sat next to TDN and Tom Bender at a couple of different events..one guy really knows big coins Tom equally turned on by the Lincolns and Indian cents..MS68 (schwietz) always teachs me something new about commems and thats a series I know a little about..I met tiny, tiny dealers who made me appreciate why I collect at all and said my hello's to all the bigger guys that have taught me so muchover the past few years from firms like Pinnacle,Legend,Whitlow...I could go on and on..I bought a Pan Pac half for 50k+ and a worn out stone mtn that looks pretty cool at 20 bucks, and even spoke to David Hall and the president of Heritage..How was your trip?

  • I think its neat that a big guy like you takes the time to chat here. I also appreciate the fact you genuinely seem to love coin collecting.

What I learned in Pittsburgh: I learned to listen to my doctor more. He said to lay off on the beer because of the gout and arthritis in my knees. I had "a few beers" at Kranky's dinner, the big dinner Friday, not to mention Saturday night. I woke up Sunday having a gout attack in my right knee. It's still botheing me alot. Shoulda listened to the doc.

    What I learned? Lots!

Unlike any other show that I have attended, one day is not nearly enough to see everything I would want to see at the ANA.

And, more importantly, it's the people that make this hobby great.

I can't agree with more! Most of the time I spent was talking to fellow forum members.

I learned you really can't do that show in a day. 600 dealers. If you spend 1 minute at each dealer's table, 600 minutes or 10 hours. It takes more than a minute to GLANCE at the dealer's case. If you actually talk to the dealers, a few more minutes. Add in the exhibits, maybe a hundred of those, the registry luncheon, talking with other members, the auctions, and your day better be 50 hours long.

What else did I learn? Better take the same tunnel back to the hotel that you used to get to the convention center unless you enjoy sightseeing at 11:00pm.image

I really enjoyed the PCGS luncheon and listening to all the big time players talking about their sets and receiving awards.

I have to admit I felt a bit out of place there as I'm a small time collector but it was great that PCGS welcomes any registry set participant large or small to attend their luncheon.

Visiting the bourse floor two days in a row was quite a treat too. Never been able to do that before at such a large show.

  • I thumbed through hundreds of B & M's rarities sale coins. I was just really overwelmed how beautiful so many truly are. I Looked at a lot of seated dimes, which never paid much mind to. They are just beautiful. And this was two weeks after I went to the Smithsonian to pay regards before they took those show cases down. I have seen more beautiful rarites in two weeks then I will ever see again, probably. I wanted to go back to see the main event in Pitt, but my family was positioned to call the psych ward.

  • I learned that it's frustrating being stuck behind a table when I really just want to go out and look at all the coins. I still can't figure out how Tootawl got his name though. image

TahoeDale: Thank you for showing your truly exceptional coins, you have great taste.

And thanks to the many board members who took the time to stop by and say hi, it was a pleasure meeting everyone.

ANR- went to dinner with 2 beautiful women.

It don't get no better than that! image

Met Reed Hawn- a guru of high end coins.

I lied... getting one's picture taken with Reed Hawn and the beauties is indeed better! image

I learned that there are bargains to be had at auction if you can stick it out til after midnite!
  • I learned to never sit down at Numismania's table ever again. I was totally ignored (never once asked if I needed any help or even acknowledged). So, I quietly stood up and went and met the nicest person I talked to at the show. Her name is Judith L. Kagin and her business name is Kagin's. I know very little about currency and she spent about 45 minutes each with me on 2 seperate occassions. I placed an order for $2.2K for a lovely bill. She has my business for sure now if it's currency and I highly reccomend her for those who need insight into currency.
