I bid on an 1807 Bust half a few months ago. I sniped with 20 seconds to go. In the last 15 seconds, the underbidder bid 3 TIMES and nailed me for a $50 loss. So much for sniping.

How was it a $50 loss? You put in your max bid what YOU felt was what you wanted to pay. Of course, you probably should have placed the bid a little bid later than 20 seconds but you shouldn't be unhappy. It was YOUR bid after all.
My definition of a "snipe" is a bid placed late enough that no one has time to respond to it before the auction is ended. There may be no hard and fast amount of time for that, but it's definitely less than 20 seconds.
I was using a computer-based sniping service (to remain unnamed). It claims to snipe within the last 20 seconds. In this particular instance, it sniped with exactly 20 seconds left to go, which isn't even a snipe. I felt that I lost $50 because the same guy bid three times right at the end. If I had sniped properly, I would have only had to beat one of his bids. This was the one and only time I've ever been nailed by sniping too soon. The person who repeatedly bid on the item was probably "sniping manually." I guess it's my own fault for trusting a computer service instead of sniping manually myself. Live and learn.
I say shill bidder too, based on the amounts bid and that they only have a feedback rating of (1). It's probably a strawman set up by the seller to make sure he gets his asking price for his stuff. One bid ending in .01 and another ending in .76?? I win a lot of auctions myself by tacking on that extra .01 at the end of my bids, but the bidding pattern seems to be designed to test the limits of your bid, rather than to actually beat it.
I do all my own sniping manually. If I want something badly enough to snipe for it, you can bet someone else does, too. I have broadband, too, so being able to refresh the listing in 1 second increments instead of 5-10 seconds helps. ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO DEFEND YOUR SNIPES!!! Online sniping tools can't counter automatically against manual snipers, unless you set your snipe price outrageously high, but then you risk buying way above market value.
Sniping in the last 20 seconds?? That's a joke! I have been doing this for so long now, that I can manually enter 20 bids in that amount of time. I rarely get out-sniped, and when I do, I make sure the dirty S.O.B. pays dearly for it.

Yes. I hope he was happy with the price as it seems this underbidder was a shill...

I guess sometimes it helps to put that bid in during the last 10 seconds.........

20 seconds isn't a snipe. It's a lunch break.
