Ebay scam? I am unsure.

The seller is innocent on this one. I was cruising around mindlessly on Sunday night looking at coins when I saw a PCGS (NS68) holdered modern US gold coin going for about 70.00. I did a little research and saw that it went for about 4 times that normally. I got suspicious and sure enough there was a big glaring feedback "DON"T BID, SELLER IS A FRAUD AND EATS KITTENS" or something along those lines.
I hesitated, and the aution ran out. Of course the snipers came out at the last second the coin still only went for about 115.00. I was curious and looked at the remainder of the feedback. The guy was an Ebay powerseller, and had thousands of positive feedbacks. There was this one feedback, left a couple of days before the auction ended (so it would be close to the top) that was strongly negative. The sellers response was that he did not know what the guy was talking about as he had never even sent him the money and received no communication from the negative poster. I checked and the negative poster was a newly minted ebay member.
My question is this. If you saw someone selling a gold coin in a pcgs holder, but he had strong negative recent feedback, would you hesitate to bid? I did. Now I am wondering if it was something else. Could this be an attempt to keep the coin value down in the bidding process? How would a seller defend himself from this? I have never sold coins on Ebay, but I cannot imagine how you could prevent this in the short term.

Not only would I tend to be less concerned over a negative like "eats kittens" (I mean, come on, that's emotional and not sticking to the facts), but when compared to a huge number of positives and an overwhelming percentage of positives (again, I'm assuming), I'd barely even consider the neg...if at all.
I really don't think that was the problem. There are enough buyers who know how to look at feedback (or hardly look at it at all) that I doubt this caused the low sale price...
The item number is 3925935240 in completed bids. Looking at the completed bids makes me think perhaps this coin did not go under value after all. I see few out there for this price or less. Which confuzzles me further as the PCGS price guide lists a MS69 1993 5$ gold as 300.00. MAN I have a lot to learn.
But my question still stands. What is to keep someone from posting stron negative feedback to influence an existing auction? Would recent strong negative feedback affect your decision to bid?

Learn to throw out the PCGS price guide and don't even use it.

Not when a seller has a 3532 feedback rating with 99.9% positives, no. And especially not when the negative came from a very low-feedback buyer.
Also notice it was retaliatory feedback to the seller.
use the guide lightly, better to check teletrade and EBAY for real prices
