This timing of things must frustrate a sniper! :)

Just a few selected entries from the bidding for a coin I just won. That 3 cents must really hurt right now.

Looks like a very nice barber!!
One thing that frustrates me about trying to snipe, is when I put a bid in at the last second which was higher than the previous bid- but it wasn't a full bid incriment higher, so the bid is rejected. So the lower bid ends up winning because it came in a few seconds before mine!!

  • I have had very good success with sniping because I follow a simple principle. Wait till the last few seconds and bid the MaX I am willing to spend. If I get it then it is usually cheaper then a prolonged fight, if not then I lost nothing as it sold at more than I wanted to pay.

Sniping works because so many are trying to be cheap and RIP a deal. If the hi bidder has his MAX bid then the highest bid between you two is the true winner. If he's trying to get a steal then it servers him right.

Also don't bid even amounts. Bids like 103.75 or 541.00 are better than 100 or 500.

Thanks all! image Yeah, I saw this one a few days ago and determined that it would be mine, so long as it didn't go over 500. It's going into the permanent collection.

Nice coin. Over on the darkside, one of our members won an item by an even smaller margin. His bid was exactly the same as the losers, but his was in first.

First, congratulations. Very nice coin at a good price.

However, this was not sniped. The sniper, if you can call him/her that, only helped nwcs pay his max price. If nwcs had sniped instead, I believe he would have won the coin for an even better price. (what's the bid increment above $468.10?)

Possibly, but I saw how the other bidder handled other auctions and it was similar. I had given some thought to sniping instead but figured I would save me some grief and if I lost it then someone else wanted it more.

Apparently it doesn't always do that. I've sniped quite a few at less than the next bid increment, including one this morning that I won by 15¢.

It depends on what the current high bid is when you snipe. ie. If the current high bid is $12.00 but the max bid is $15.00, then if you snipe with $15.15 you will win. However, if the high bid were to become $15.00 before your snipe bid, then your $15.15 bid would be rejected.

    Joe.
