Had Mark Feld check this one out for me while he was @ the ANA. He actually said the coin was beautiful. So I threw up a bid and won. Hard to tell from these lousy pics how nice the coin really is though. I can't wait to see it in person.
It's an upgrade in color and grade so I couldn't let it pass by. My thanks to Mark!
Thanks

Exactly how I feel, Steve. It actually even looks pretty nice on this scan. And you had Mark view it for you in person, how can you go wrong?
I think you may have taken it in the shorts but in a very good way. When it arrives it will feel soooooo goooooood
That reverse looks like a real pretty blue color. Nice

<< <i>I'm willing to bet this coin has tremendous color. I don't understand why Heritage doesn't do a better job with toned coins. >>
They are lousy to be sure. In their defense I can say I know personally that it is VERY diffcult to get a good picture from a coin in an NGC slab. The white makes it difficult to light the coin. It's like taking a picture of someone with a very bright background. The person looks to be in shadow in the subsequent picture.
With all the coins they auction it would seem to be a very difficult job to photo correctly ALL the lots.
Nice coin Fratt...congrads. Fratt can now send me his coin so I can take a better picture.

That's interesting. With my setup, I have an easier time getting colors to show with NGC holders. I've had some real trouble with PCGS coins. Could be the camera or the lighting.

In MY case, it is my ignorance of my camera. I've been doing some reading lately so when I get more time (or I buy a new coin that's slabbed NGC) I'm going to do some experiments. Ain't digital nice?
As to your PCGS coins maybe use a black cloth behind the slab. It helps...I wish I could do that with my NGC slabs.
My guess is that since Heritage handles so many coins they don't take the time needed to make good shots....all the time.

If Heritage could get their images right I'm sure they could be getting a lot more bids through Ebay or their own site. I am really surprised an auction house of their size can't do a better job. There are at least a dozen forum members that could do this for them and increase their bids/profits significantly. It just makes more sense to provide accurate pictures.
Now -- Superior on the other hand I think is doctoring their photos a bit. When I look at their auction lots in person I have to wonder who's doing their photography/editing work since rarely is the coin as vibrant as the pic.
There has to be a middle ground to this.
Anyway, once I get it back I'll take a couple of pics myself and post them with the Heritage pics to show the differences. But it really does pay to have someone look at the coin for you especially if you're going to bid strongly on it.

Are you referring to that toned Peace $ you own???????
Give it up already and move on.

I totally agree with you, there is some pretty serious image manipulation going on with Superior images. Of course, Superior is now what used to be TAGZ, and for those of you who are familiar with TAGZ it shouldn't come as a surprise.
Once the coins are large enough, PCGS/NGC/ANACS really have the same difficulty/ease for photography. Make sure you're metering the light on the coin, and not the entire image, which factors in the slab. NGC slabs are really hard for the little coins, because they cast a shadow when the coin is recessed, making me like PCGS more for those

It looks like a wonderful coin even given the not too wonderful photograph. But my local dealer would say "too dark, everyone what's bright coins". Ba, humbug.
I trust Mark's eye for coins!

If so, I'll be very pleased.

Like I said, I need to get to know how my camera works a bit better. I haven't had much time but I plan on some test shots soon.

I won a gorgeous little Walker in the Heritage sale myself.... But since the pictures suck I will post it when I have a better one.
