PCGS Coin RECOLORED!

Got back my ANACS submission today....Some upgrades some downgrades...and a PCGS No-Grade! That's right, ANACS claimed that a 1972 DDO Lincoln certified by PCGS has been recolored, and thus could not be slabbed. I suspected this was the case before I sent it in, and now my thoughts are confirmed. So - will this qualify for PCGS's Grade Guarantee? Do I just need to send in the coin and the letter from ANACS, or do I need to send it in for Presidential Review? What kind of a payout should I expect from PCGS? Here are some quick pics. The coin looks very funny in hand, and the pictures make it look better than it is. I also included the letter from ANACS. What'dya think?

In conclusion what is the procedure for Grade Guarantee?
In case you're wondering, here's a rundown of the other coins in this submission:

1864 Bronze No L Indian Cent, VF-25 details, net VG-8, corroded. (Was PCI VG-8 Environmental Damage MPD, lost the MPD! image )
1905 Indian Cent, MS-61 Brown RPD (Was PCI AU-58 RPD Gold Label image Makes up for the above.) Just noticed - Not Listed in Snow!
1922 Lincoln, DNC (Is SEGS EF-40, didn't meet grade requirement. image )
1927-S Lincoln, MS-63 Brown (Was NTC MS-65 R-B image )
1972 Lincoln, MS-65 Red (Bought raw as DDO #5 image )
1972 Lincoln, MS-64 Red (Bought raw as DDO #6 image )
1984 Lincoln, DNC (Is PCI MS-65 R&B "Doubled Profile" Not DDO, machine doubling. Pretty much expected) image
1953 Roosevelt Dime, PR-65 (Was PCI PR-67 Gold Label. Crossed b/c of nice blue-green toning) image
1928 St. Gaudens $20 MS-64 (Certified for family member, was expecting AU-58! Good news!) image
1928 St. Gaudens $20 MS-64 (Certified for family member, was expecting AU-58! Good news!) image
And of course the PCGS DDO DNC, recolored. Not too bad... I'll try to post some more pictures later. Please give your thoughts on the PCGS DNC and what the procedure for Grade Guarantee is.

Not surprising, PCGS surely makes mistakes from time to time. I often wonder how many "bad" (like in altered or counterfeit) coins end up slabbed by the good and bad grading services.

Ever read the small print in the PCGS guarantee?? Doesn't say a thing about fakes!!!!

As far as your situation is concerned, I suspect you are SOL -- no recourse if the coin has been removed from the PCGS holder (a fair qualification).

It hasn't been removed - it's still in the slab. ANACS only cracks it out if they cross it.

Why would anyone want to cross from PCGS to ANACS in the first place??

Because I thought it was recolored and wanted to check as inexpensively as possible and had an order going into ANACS at that time anyway. Also, I'm working on a set of all the 1972 DDO's in ANACS holders.
  • What's the PCGS grade on the '72 DDO ?

I've harped on that for years. Glad to see that at least one other person has noticed.

Shame to ruin such a nice variety that way. Smart move asking ANACS.

I'd give Customer Service a call and ask.

You say that it "looks funny" in hand.It could have possibly turned bad in the holder after something suspect was done to if before submittal to PCGS.It sounds like a prime "Grading guarantee" coin to me.Best of Luck!

Thanks for all the advice so far. I think I'll do as you suggested and give customer service a call. Just a little more info - the coin appears to have been cleaned and been "hazed over", especially on the reverse where the hazing is only in the fields. It is a shame that someone ruined a nice coin that way. What kind of action do you think PCGS would take if I sent it in for Grade Guarantee?

Good advice so far. I'd say the ANACS note is certainly grounds for review, though maybe you'd be better off leaving well enough alone. Still, if I left well enough alone, I'd feel like a con artist if I tried to sell it as a true 64RD.

And nice score on those Saints. Real nice. image

Send it to PCGS as a grade guarantee submission. They'll crack it and regrade it--if it is bagged, they'll give you the coin's value, or find a 64RD and send it to you.

    << <i>--if it is bagged, they'll give you the coin's value, >>

The bagged value or the pre-bagged value? Also, how do they determine the value?
  • Sounds like a doctored coin. image That would be one the first things I would suspect. I don`t know that for sure though.

They'll probably look at the past auction prices realized. You receive the value of the coin as it was in the holder--the guarantee wouldn't work so well if they gave you the value of the doctored coin image

Or, you can choose to receive the coin and the cash, less the value of the coin as a damaged piece (it will be raw when you get it back).

PCGS is good on these issues and won't be there to rip you off.

It's hard to believe it looked like that when PCGS graded it. They usually bag any unusual color due to their copper guaranty and I've seen much more natural looking small cents than that get bodybagged. It was probably dipped just prior to submission and turned in their holder.
  • I would guess that PCGS would offer you a refund on the $30 grading fee...
