Lint removal?

Is there anything special to remove lint from coins with out hurting them? Canned air may work but sometimes condensation comes out. Is there anything else?

  • I've used the canned air on proofs, but I don't know of anything else.

A VERY LIGhT swipe with a goat hair brush will do the trick, but it's copper collectors guys who have goat hair brushes.

If you don't have a goat hair brush, try a light swipe with a silk cloth. Copper collectors used to use those as well.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • You mean taking a piece of used chewing gum and pressing it on the coin is not a good idea?
  • I would not use canned air on a coin. Besides the condensation aspect, how bout the chemical aspect? How do you think they get that air in there? image It's just like it says, do not inhale or spray in eyes... gives you a clue that it might not be safe image

    I don't use canned air.

I have used sable brushes (or any other soft brush) very successfully.

I use the slides that are in dansco albums. Latex gloves work fine also.

Isn't there a small computor keyboard and typewriter vacum with an extremely fine brush. I'm thinking I seen one somewhere. image

I would much rather use a gentle puff of canned air than any kind of brush or any other object.

a gentle puff will not cause condensation... only a big sudden blast, or holding the button too long causes condensation.

  • You might try rinsing the lint away with alcohol, distilled water, or acetone.

    I also recommend acetone.
  • Is the lint removed during the grading process?

If the 'lint' is stuck due to gunk (i.e. PVC residue, human oils, etc.) then do what conder101 said.

If the coin is 'dry' and has lint here and there, then a gentle swipe or two using the aforementioned brush will remove any offending dust particle WITHOUT causing hairlines, etc.

Don't believe it. Then ask yourself why a copper guy would swipe clean a $25k copper from their case to give you a 'good look'. They're not going to take a chance on hairlining a coin like that.

This is not a suggestion, but has anyone ever tried one of those brush/blowers that are used to blow the lint off of a camera lens?

    That might do the trick.

I bought a Lewis and Clark Proof Commerative and I accidently opened the airtite it is in when removing it from the little felt lined display box it came in. I closed the capsule and later noticed that many small pieces of felt lint had gotten on the coin. I opened the airtite and removed the coin with plastic gloves on my hands. Holding the coin firmly by the edges I used a vacuum cleaner with the hose attachment on it to vacuum off the lint. I held it about an inch away from the open end of the vacuum hose. It worked great. I was a little worried that I might accidently loosen my grip on the coin and it would get sucked into the vacuum though.
