Yo Conderrrrrrrrrrrr................

I picked-up two PCI 3 slabs today, these are definately 3's as they match exactly the pictures of the slab on page 242 of your book.

They have Serial numbers 02798-08 and 02798-10, the discrepency is that the book states that these particular design was used between 1988 and 1989, however, both of these slabs contain 1991 ASE's.

Jim

Edited to add; why do these ASE's graded MS 67 in the PCI slabs look so much better than the the ASE in my Collectors Club PCGS MS 68 slab?image

Cam, Conder actually mentions that particular slab (yours) on page 43 in his book. He states, "Recently an 89 SAE was found in one of these!"

  • You must have the second printing because the first edition didn't have that.

  • Hmmm I've obviously got problems with the dates of usage on the early PCI slabs. I'm not sure yet how to account for this new information. But keep it coming folks!

The 91 SAE obviously seems to indicate that the PCI 3 must have been used later than I thought but 1991? To be used that late creates a problem with PCI 4. We know that PCI switched over to the small sized HALLMARK type slabs in mid 1991. (Based on the sample slabs that they gave away at the 1991 ANA convention.) But that would mean that PCI 4 would have been issued for a very short time and should be much scarcer than PCI 3 slabs. That hasn't seemed to be the case though. Obviously I need to gather more information on the relative appearance rate of PCI 3 and 4 slabs. If the PCI 4 ISN'T a lot scarcer than PCI 3 that would tend to indicate that both were used at the same time.

The 89 SAE (I have seen two more 1989 dated coins in PCI 1 slabs as well.) in a PCI 1 slab would seem to indicate that I have the first two varieties seriously screwed up. I had orginally placed PCI 1 as the first variety since it was the only one with the white grade on the picture and because they were much scarcer than PCI 2. I assumed they were therefor older and had been used for a brief period. Now the appearance of the 1989's would make it seen that the PCI 2 may have come first, been used for some time, and then the PCI 1 was introduced, the white grade on the poto was not liked and they then quickly switched over to the PCI 3. The problem with that theory is that the PCI 1 slabs I have have lower serial numbers than the PCI 2 slabs. (Did they start serial numbers over again with the new slab style? or did they do PCI 2, PCI 1 very briefly, and return to PCI 2 so that most of the PCI 2 have higher serial numbers? Te latter speculation is unlikely as the PCI 2 serial numbers I have are MUCH higher than my PCI 1 slabs.)

I love watching stuff like this unfold... Great job bringing the info forward. There is no I in Team, and a team is what it takes to get the job done. Great job team.
