Anybody have a gold coin for a pocket piece?

I think it would be cool to have one if it were cleaned or damaged. No sense in wearing down a good one, of course.

Yes- one or two folks here do. I can't recall who it was, though.

All mine are holey hat pieces. image

  • I wish, I can't even afford a 1/10th oz. gold coin at the moment.
  • I do though it`s in a plastic flip. It`s a 1911 $2 1/2 Indian.

I have two...a $20 Saint and a $10 Indian...not in flips. I'm also looking for two more of the same, so if anyone out there has a couple of junque ones, please let me know.

    Cheers,

My late grandfather owned a money clip with a $20 Saint mounted within it that I am now in possession. Though I do not carry it as a money clip (way too gaudy, especially for $20 or less that I usually carry with me image), technically it would qualify as a pocket piece.
  • My wife has three pendants, a $5, $10 and a $20.
It depends on the mood etc as to which one gets worn from time to time.

I have a 1879 $10 Lib as a pocket piece. I bought it as a nice XF and have been carrying it around every day for about 10 months and can say it has not worn down but just a TINY fraction. When you see a VF or lower gold coin that means that coin was carried around ALOT!

No, but I knew a fellow who carried a 1792 half disme as a pocket piece.

Believe it or not he lost it. image

idocoins, I like that idea. I think I'll do the same.

I don't think that it would make P-01 because there is not enough left of the reverse to determine if it had a mint mark.

Would be cool to have a gold pocket piece (I wrote gold PP first and decided that the connotation of a "gold PP" is not good). I just have a cleaned 1880S Morgan in Au that I'm trying to wear down.

  • Beat ya to it, Idocoins -- I have been using an 1881 $5 Lib for a ball marker for a while now. Pickup foursomes really get a kick out of it.

  • I've got a 1904 Liberty in my wallet at AU58. Since the 04 is extremely common, it's not worth that much plus it is 100 years old....great conversation piece.

I have several 1994 $5 Gold Eagles still in their original presentation cases which we all know means they have been in these air-tites since day 1 and would grade 69/70
