More fun on ebay

This coin showed up on our BST board: 1909-S VDB

This line is priceless:
This coin has been authenticated by my local dealer so it is NOT fake. He also says that it has NOT been cleaned.

He writes on the BST board:
It's raw and wasn't able to be graded by pcgs.

How is he going to snare an unsuspecting newbie when he offers that last bit of information?

A raw 1909-S VDB on eBay? Not with a ten foot pole.
  • I wish his pics of the obverse weren't so "up close" - I'd rather have a "long shot" (panorama) to assess the mintmark for authenticity! I'll bet you drop this in acetone and the MM will start to shake, rattle, and roll!!

K6AZ said it all - "key, raw, ebay" = no way!!

What's sad Mike is the reserve is met, and apparently it is going to sell. Seems no matter how much people talk about this exact scenario, there are always a certain percentage of people who believe they can get a good deal on a raw better date sight unseen. You don't get something for nothing, and there is no Santa Claus in numismatics. Quality costs money.

  • K6AZ - Check out another one the high bidder's recent purchases:

I sure hope he knows what he's doing! Seems to buy a lot of "collectibles" and doesn't seem to specialize in coins. Bet he's getting burned!

If you ask me Mike, that is someone with more dollars than sense. I sure wouldn't be buying early key and semi key Lincolns raw on eBay.

I wonder if the seller bought the cent from his "local dealer"
  • We'll we have a seller trying to scam a buyer who is probably trying to scam the seller.
The buyer can charge it on a card and then fire off a chargeback. A fake money order would probably work too, recently some fake USPS money orders have been surfacing here and there.
I've noticed that since the new design US currency came out there has been a spate of counterfeit American Express Travelers checks going around, as almost no one accepts them anymore around here. Everyone has signs posted "No travelers checks".
Oooh, the best one would be to pay for the coin with counterfeit US currency and see if the buyer falls for it. Send him 5 hundred dollar bills and tell him to keep the change. heh heh
