Regardless, the owner has been beating off the wolves trying to pick these off.
PS.. and if that weren't cool enough...the same deal had a pair of 1929 $5 half eagles too. they also graded out PCGS MS64!

1929 was the year my Mom was born! Then the Great Depression began with the stock market crash of October 29, 1929!
A great year indeed!
BTW, I love the Saint in your pic - congrats!!

The 1929 is a special coin in Saints. As this series was one of the most art-deco designs, they really captured the period leading up to and including Roaring Twenties, culminating with the explosion of partying and wealth and then the horror and decimation of the crash and depression...all peaking in 1929...What year could be more approprite from a historic perspective...And RARE too!
Mint bags of $20 gold coins were only 250 coins. There are quite a few ms64's but the POPs are artificially high. In MS65 they are actually scarcer that the 31 and 31-D!! Ergo the desire to try to get a 64 upgraded and the keepin the damn labels, the fargin bastidges!!!
The late dates (1929-1932) are generally in pristine condition and have those sharp cuts on them. It's because they never left the Fed vaults due to the crash and the need to hold gold to support the dollar. Therefore, the only hits were when the bags got tossed around from one truck to another. The grading services will accept a minimal amount of them and still give GEM designation, since this is so edemic to the few survivors of these dates. One thing about them...they look so much better than the earlier dates...Sharply struck, creamy swirling liquid fields and frosty...the colors are wonderful, esp. the 1931-D.
