<< <i>Why do you think it is cleaned? >>

Because it's a raw coin offered on eBay. image
  • Ziggy has a pt, if it would grade at pcgs it would be in a slab
you may find some later date mercs raw on ebay that are okay
but most of the early dates that are raw and would be costly at high grades
    will have a problem

  • For what its worth I have made several purchases from that seller. Almost all of his coins are raw. He only seems to sell a very few slabbed coin.
  • I think you guys are afraid to admit that this coin is NOT cleaned, but in fact a hermetically sealed coin taken from a mint bag in 1917, buried, unearthed this year, hermetic seal removed, and now we see a nice MS68++ specimen? imageimageimage
  • Went for $416...For the buyer's sake, I hope it wasn't cleaned
  • appears whizzed !

  • Yup- just has than unnatural sheen to it like a chrome bumper. Uncleaned silver has more satiny look instead of smooth chrome.

I agree 100%, cleaned AU58. Subdued and blotchy luster. Typical characteristics of a cleaned coin. I am offended that the seller would even come close to calling it choice BU. Its a better date, so its worth AU money IMHO, but nowhere near UNC or so called "choice".
  • The buyer will not be happy if he tries to get it slabbed, bodybag all the way

That is the word I was looking for, CHROME. I like to say "tinny" or looks like tin foil. It might be the lighting of the photo but if the coin really was a choice piece there is NO reason not to submit it. Unless.....
