  • I cannot give a grade to this coin without looking at it in person. No one can grade coins from a digital photo. Anything anyone could say about it will just be a guess. image

I see no luster in the fields so I will say it is MS61 or less. mike

This is true but we can narrow it down to say........AU58-MS61 details.

That should be well understood here. There are many things you can't get from a picture. Take your best shot... image

$2.5's are not my strong point, mostly experienced in $5's and learning $10's but this is certainly an interesting grading study. These comments are only offered as seasoning for the thread, not the end of the thread. The color is very good but the luster needs to be seen in real light. The protected areas of the fields (bet. the eagles legs, between the s and the m by the eagles front legs, under the chin on the obverse) are pretty dinged up for a good ms coin but the obverse face seems remarkably scratch and ding free, that's a question mark. The strike, particularly on the eagles top wing is certainly strong and the details on both sides of the coin are well struck and preserved, particularly the headband, cotton in the feathers and the feathers themselves. This coin is a good grading study and I would venture a 58 on this one and be glad to have it but after that I would have answer some of the questions.

The problem with this coin is the luster...based on the picture of course. The coin looks "shiny" meaning it has been cleaned or polished. But, of course, this is only a digital photo so it could be entirely different with a different light/exposer/whatever.

When the surface is smooth on a $2.5 or $5 Indian and the luster is dull something ain't right. image

    • OK, just a guess, but I will say AU58. If it is in an ngc holder rather than an anacs, it is probably graded ms62. But the coin has numerous nicks and I guess hairlines, which I cannot see in the photograph, but I suspect they are there. In a PCGS holder, if they graded it at all, it would most likely be an AU58. This is using the SWAG method of course! image

Everything is just a guess since a grade is just a matter of opinion. image

I'm terrible on gold but I would also venture towards MS63
      Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

VERY tough to grade incuse indians from photos; need to tilt the coin back and forth in the light.

that said, tough to see this one going less than AU58, or possibly Unc details, wiped, net AU55

on the high side, could be a 62 or 63, don't see it making 64, again the surfaces look a little "funny" but maybe it's the pic.

Average it out and my guess is MS61

    • OK, this indian used to be in a NGC MS61 holder. I sent it over to ANACS in hopes for an upgrade and it came back AU55 (no net grade or anything)... imageimage

Ouch! Regardless of minor imperfections it just looks too good for 55

I was thinking AU but it is hard to grade these in hand let alone pics. There does appear to be surface chafe to the left of the face...

    • i thought the obverse color was funky.
i also thought it had great eye appeal and i was insulting you at 63 !

    • It is really tough to find a 2.5 or 5 Ind gold in the grade of 61 or 62 in an NGC holder with a serial # below 1.5 mil that is not loaded with hairlines. Those coins will always grade au at PCGS and I guess ANACS. Gold coins can fool a person because they can have full luster and still be loaded with hairlines. image

      OK Grade the gold...imageimage

    • Thank you for the breathtaking photo of a very rare coin in high grade, as this one is. I will say ms65 but it could be a 66 or a 64 depending on what the photo does not show me. image

It is difficult to grade Mint State coins from pictures. Once you get to MS-65 and higher, it's virtually impossible to grade any coin to the exact point. Going on the conservative side I would have graded the $20 gold as an MS-65 from the picture with a shot at MS-66.

Techeff: I saw your thread too late to guess the grade, but I was prepared to post an Indian Grade of AU-58 because I thought that I saw a few circulation marks and some circulation friction.

      I think that it's an honest AU-55 to AU-58 -- honest image
