I've been a member of the local coin club for about five years now. I must admit that I dont go to nearly as many club meetings as I used to. I got the reminder letter in the mail last week and decided I was going to make it a point to go to the next one. Well, I got busy, as usual and forgot all about it. On the way back from the Fed Ex station (was picking up a few coins) I remembered that the meeting was tonight. Well, having already missed the first thirty minutes of it, I decided to go anyway. Conviniently, I had a few coins from the fed ex package.
So I get there, and show a pair of low/mid grade SVDB's in PCGS holders to a couple of collectors. The were all smiles about it. Then a dude (dealer) that I know very well walks over to see them. He pulls out his loop, looks at them for a few seconds. Hands them back to me and says, "Well, the got one of them right." Well, enough is enough. The dude is always bashing my coins (always in PCGS/NGC holders). Man, I dismissed my normal passiveness and said, "Well, I'm glad you think so." Then he went into how he knew he was right. I tore into his arguments, then he told me to get an ANA book. I told him I didnt need a book to tell me how to grade lincolns. It went on a little longer with him finally backing off. (He might have done a better job arguing if he were sober.)
Mean while the two guys that were standing there with me were trying to hold back their laughter. I found out that the guy appearently does that to their stuff too, and they were happy to see someone jump back.
Here's the kicker... he's always talking about how ACG does a better job than PCGS at grading coins. Concidering his stock is probably 80% ACG and 20% raw, I wonder why he'd think that... and I wonder what ACG would grade them....
Sometimes I just get hacked off at people that think they know more than me. I know there are a lot that do... but when it comes to Lincolns... he isnt one of them.

That ought to tell you all you need to know.
There are a helluva lot of people out there who know more than I do and damn near everybody has a better collection, but nobody insults my coins but me.
I don't have anyone to bash my coins - I do enough of that myself tho.

That's how I kinda feel about that Mark Feld "coinguy!" He's always telling me how ugly my toned Peace $ are!

If at a future meeting he comes over to see something of yours, you could just say, "You don't like any of my coins anyway, so you don't need to take a look."
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I also had a guy insult my Lincoln cent at my coin club. I didn't know they guy. We have a show and tell, and I displayed my proof satin 1936 cent next to a 1937 brilliant proof. I wanted to show the differences in minting practices in proofs. The satin was graded PF64 red. it looks great but there is a single thin hairline in the obverse field that keeps it at 64. The guy picked it up and said I can't believe it graded 64 with that scratch, is that a fingerprint too? (there is no fingerprint) I told him, it is a 64, it doesn't have to be perfect. Have you even seen a satin proof before? Gee, you try to show something different and interesting and get attacked.

Now we also know why the Dealer is all liquored up.

That's how some dealers do it. They first tell you how lousy your coins to soften you up, then they low ball you with an offer to buy.
It's like someone throwing it in your face about how many thousands of stupid dollars they spent on a coin while you have a coin buget. I guess they have to make up for the lack of substance between their legs.

hey hip kitty please don't be offened
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
Always looking for nice type coins

You know, come to think of it... One time I suggested that except for an unfortunate
incident in Dallas there might have been a clad Franklin. She gave me one of these ""
and it kindda hurt my feelings too.. In her defense though, she probably just likes
her Frankies of more substance and unclad. It also might be a little disconcerting try-
ing to find all those additional coins and albums.
Whatever the case Russ, I doubt she does it to hurt.
Some day we'll get a "" instead and all will be well again.
If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
Life is too short to drag it out.

Just shoot them. Hmm, has a nice ring to it. Shoot the other coins then lordmarcovan will want them as they will then qualify for his vest.
I would stack your abilities with Lincolns against most other collectors and almost all dealers. That gentleman seems the fool.IMHO

The next time that you are showing coins and the town drunk comes along, refuse to let him look at your coins and inform him that "you are only interested in sober opinions". Don't think he will bother you after that.

David, stick to your methods you probably grade better than that dealer does anyway.

don't let a buttmunch get to you
About 9 months ago, I was sitting and visiting with a really good dealer friend of mine from Houston. We visiting and going through each other's stuff. Ohhs and ahhs abounded. The dealer mentioned in the first post walks up to my buddy's table and hand's him a dansco album of Lincolns and says with beaming pride, "What do you think of this." Ok, I've already been to the dude's table and have seen the set. It's complete minus the SVDB/22-PL and 80+% of the coins are cleaned VF/XF's. I signal to my friend that it's not something he wants to buy so he politely passes (as if he needed my help on such junk.) Then the guy asks me what I thought of the set. Well, I didnt want to ruffle feathers, but I certainly didnt want to say that it was a nice set, so I said that it was ok. His responce was, "It's ok. Well coming from you, that must mean that it's a really nice set. I mean come on, all those MS cents you have." I started to really get onto him then for trying to put words into my mouth... particularly trying make the case that I was endorcing the set when it was junk. I didnt, though. I just looked at him and said, "That's not what I said."
Eventually, you get tired of dealing with people like that.
Btw... the price on the set... $4000. I wouldnt have paid $200.
