You're right. Even with money to spend they are difficult to find.

Depends on how serious you are and how much money you have.

By the way, I've been known to "middle" a few earlies from time to time ( inside joke via RK)

If I can help, let me know.

I have purchased a couple of early gold coins from Doug Winter/Pinnacle, including the favorite coin of my collection (below). I have always loved the capped bust right design. As a young collector, that is one I always hoped to be able to purchase (along with a Stella!).

Actually your best source are auctions....there are four next week with a ton of what you are looking for...from au50-ms64's!! You probably know that that market is red hot...just not enough supply to meet buyer's needs.

    GOOD LUCK!!image

Try Jim McGuigan, he specializes in early US coins including Gold.

You could send me a want list.

It would take a while, but I'd find the right pieces eventually. It all depends upon you are willing to spend. It take deep pockets to collect early U.S. gold. And if you are looking for high grades or scarace dates or types, the coins don't even have to be THAT nice to bring big bucks.

I love early gold. As a collector I wish that I could afford more of it.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • I agree with RYK, and Bruce Sher, Doug Winter of Pinnacle........ He has written several articles and books on early gold.....

Saintguru....... I would only recommend auctions if you are going to be there for the auction, or have someone there with experience that you trust, if you're going to be bidding online.... JMHOimage

I have also been known to buy and sell early gold...

    Highmoon Numismatics.

Would probably be best to call as many people as possible, compare prices etc...

Agree 100% with Puff (as usual image). Buying coins sight unseen at auction is frought with peril. I know I have been burned in the past and will no longer do it.
  • Doug Winter is a good guy.
