Choosing the best Album for a US Type set

I want to work on a nice type set for 1800 to date US coins, maybe even including the regular issue gold coins. I have considered trying to fill the Dansco #7070 album. Does anybody know what all this album holds or have a better suggestion. I can't find one to look at to see what all it holds. I am not looking for something to throw a lot super worn coins in, this is something I would work on for a few years or more. I want a nice set or as nice as I can afford.

Thanks in advance..
I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....

    The gold page is optional.

7070 doesn't have slots for draped bust coins, probably because of the 1800 cutoff and you could logically have a draped bust coin prior to 1800.

Add the gold page and you have a nice set, but no 3 dollar princess.

If your coins are certifed, actually nothing works well.

If your coins are raw, I'd go with eagle holders because they are so flexible. You can decide what holes you want to create as "types." They also provide good protection and break down easily so that they can fit in safe deposit boxes.

My type set is mostly in my head. The coins are certifed (mostly) or in Eagle holders in the bank. Most of my modern type coins are still in their mint sealed Proof set holders.

  • I have my type set in a Dansco 7070 album and it works perfectly for me. Probably the best coin related purchase i've made yet. I made it easy to organize my goals and what i needed and provided a safe and portable housing for my set...definitaly recomended

I am personally working on the same Dansco 7070 album with the gold page added. All or most of my coins will be toned. I am buying slabbed coins for the album and taping the PCGS/NGC labels to the back of the page. Should be fun.
  • I'm a Dansco fan myself...I'm skipping the gold page though...
Did the same thing as jb...cracked a lot of slabs and stuck the inserts in the book

The 7070 is the one to have, be it with or without the gold page.

I have all but three coins in the 7070, and it works well, but I have just started obtaining the moderns and the major types not included in the album in PCGS slabs. When that's done (ha! I should live so long) I'll have the album coins slabbed by PCGS. Then I have no clue how I'll store 'em.

Dansco was my main type set album.

Then I found an old Whitman .....BASIC....type set. Switched. Although the Whitman skipped all the arrows, arrows and rays, etc. and had only ONE large cent, it had a hole for Bust Dollar. Only ONE seated dollar though. But for a really nice MAJOR type, it looked neat. They also made a gold page and I found one of those. It had space for the T2 and the three dollar. Actually, thinking back I used a gold ALBUM that was two pages and put the loose leafs (leaves?) into the Type Set album.

    It ....did....look slick.

I'll have to look for it. It's around somewhere. Also got one of the ORIGINAL Danscos bound in RED with those neat really THICK pages that never slidemark a coin. And they're buff instead of that plastic tan stuff. And BORDERED with neat old style striping. Really classy.

But NOTHING holds a candle to the Dansco type sets preceding THAT one. Don't know if they made it for US, but I had a Hong Kong type set in one. The cover is red but so are the pages, but thick and TEXTURED. Richest looking album I ever saw.

I miss my Hong Kong type set. That ......dollar.....is a purdy coin.

I like the Dansco... the colors of the album with the coins makes for a classy set.

And then there's also the Library of Coins type set that has holes for no stars, small stars, shooting stars, star of Davids, big quarter, small quarter, .....SEVENTEEN NINETY SIX quarter......MATCHING half....and....well you get the intimidating picture.

That sounds neat. I'd love to see a picture of one.

The HK type set sounds neat, too. Was it Victoria on up?

I have been working on the Dansco for almost a year. grades are mostly in the low 60s but I have a few 65s. I have had to crack out a lot in order to fill the holes. I keep a small plastic bag with the certs in it. I have been very happy with the Dansco. However, it does have some varieties missing. I would like to have all 3 3CS varieties, arrows and rays as well as just arrows varieties on the dime, quarter and half. The gold page is also not complete. It is missing the Type 2 gold dollar and the 3 dollar gold as mentinoed earlier.

There are a few others, but these are the main ones I have a problem with. I have thought of paying Dansco to make a seperate page to include the "missing stuff". I figure it might be expensive. maybe if we all combine a list of what coins we think is missing and approach Dansco as a unit and have a bunch of the pages made, it won't be too expsensive. We would all split the set up charges.

    I'm in!

Let's have them put holes for the classic head $2.5 and $5.00 gold in there while we're at it.

  • I'm just starting out on a Type Set (two actually). They're going to be my lifetime coin goals.

The first set is in my Dansco 7070. It's going to be focused on last date of issue, with all coins being in Fine condition, because I don't like putting UNC coins in those sliding albums. It's going to be for presentation and general asthetics, coins with character.

Secondly, I'm going to work on a Basic US Design Set (probably registry worthy in the long run), using only slabbed coins, which I'll keep in the safety deposit box. These will be focused on the common dates in the best possible condition.

The tricky part about the first set is finding the gold in Fine condition.

Forgot.....the Whitman also included the "classic" head gold besides the three.

Here is one of the type set holders that I use. This is one of two gold holders from the Kingswood type set.
These were made by Capital for Bowers and Merena.
The picture is terrible but you can see the design of the holder. I wish I knew of a way to photograph these holders. The glare kills the photo. Any one have any luck taking pictures of Capital holders to get detail without the reflections ?

    Thanks for all the feedback.........

After reading all the helpful info I decided to go with the Dansco 7070. It is a bummer that it doesn't have a hole for the Bust Dollar, one of the few coins I already have to make part of my type set.

    Thanks again.

    Good decision.

I'm having so much fun with my Dansco type set that I'm seriously considering selling my Morgan date set to fund more type set purchases. The Dansco type set is a very, very fun set to put together and if Baley set doesn't get you hooked, nothing will image.
