Got my ID card and bookelt full of info in the mail today. I have a couple of maybe obvious questions about it. First off, what should I do with the card, I was thinking about laminating it, should I not let others see my member number? It says that if the book you want to check out is out of print or too rare, they will photo copy the pages you want at a certain cost per page. I was told by another forum member that that is illegal, I was gonna do that myself with the books that I liked that were too expensive or old. How is that handled, whats the deal? When do I recieve my first Numismatist? If you have any other newbie tips for people that just joined the ANA please let me know, or things I should be doing or looking at, or purchasing, please let me know. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Im up the ladder in coin collecting.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I believe that coping pages from books is ok, as long as you don't try to sell them or use them for anything other than your personal purposes.
I mean, you can go to the public library and copy stuff all you want as long as you have enough change for the copier!!

Regarding your question about photocoping . . .
You bring up two separate issues. First, for you to photocopy a complete book, it is illegal (assuming the book is copyrighted and not in the public domain). Second, photocopying a section (i.e. certain pages, chapter, etc) is legal if you are using it for your own use and not distributing it or selling it or providing a reproduction as part of other materials you create and distribute. The process is often referred to as "fair use". This is how students and teachers can photocopy journal articles for their studies, research, or classroom. The librarians at the ANA are very smart and honorable folks and would not knowingly do anything illegal.
