Interesting morgan with fingerprints

This one caught my eye, first by the toning and fingerprints, and then by the horribly weak strike. I just saw an NTC 1889 ms64 morgan that had the same detail- very flat ear and no breast feathers. My own reaction is interesting as well- when I saw the NTC coin, I thought "I wonder if they really messed up, and it's only a au55". Whereas, the PCGS coin made me think that it probably was just a case of worn dies or poor strike....

Just some info. I've had several coins like that, and they are very difficult to image, and a lot of times they look ugly with weak strikes in the images. This guy is a fellow board member, and I have dealt with him before. As far as the blast white reverse, it could be he is using auction templates and failed to catch that.

I'm not trying to criticize anyone's coins, I just found this one to have a very interesting look. It may have a very weak strike, which I don't think should keep it out of a 63 holder. What I found more interesting was my initial reactions to two different coins in different plastic with the same photographed look. I'm sure other people do it all the time- if the coin is in a garbage holder, it probably is overgraded. If in good holder, it's probably just a weak strike.....

I agree that the strike is weak. Even so, it probably looks much nicer in person.

Yeah, actually, I think it looks pretty cool. I normally don't like fingerprints, but when they are really prominent and toned over with decades-old toning, they start to look really distinctive!

  • Hi,

Odd looking coin, honestly, if it was shown to me raw I would have said it was cleaned... badly. It really looks as if it was originally very toned and harshly scrubbed or something.

Anyways... I showed my ferret, Mischief, the coin and I took a shot of her opinion...

The new wave description for "distinctive fingerprints" is Toning Breaks. image I usually hate any kind of fingerpints... but will forgive a little on old Bust material. Not much mind you but just a little if it's just some old print lines . Mainly because Bust material is sooo tough to find crusty and original,

But I still will pass if the prints show too much. Now Morgans? I don't care how or where they are, just makes me feel "Dirty" all over. Can't even sleep at night with a fingerprinted Morgan around.
