When was the last time you were offered a coin and thought...

...if I don't buy this coin now, I may never get another chance?

What did you do? So far, were you right?

I have always at least tried to buy the coin. In only 1 instance did I not get the coin. It was a Heritage auction for a toned 26-D Peace $ and I should have bid higher. But since I was just starting the set, I had no idea how hard it was to find a nicely toned 26-D in MS. Now, if I want it, I get it no matter if it's in auction or for sale.

My thought process is that I can always sell it later if a better coin comes along. Even if I lose a % I really don't care. Since nicely toned Peace $ are so hard to come by, I won't take the chance that a better one will show up.

So far its worked just fine.

This has happened to me several times........ Especially on the series and grades I collect when there are only a few coins offered that meet my specifications...... So far I haven't been wrong or disappointed.

The one and only time was with a 1796 quarter.

I bought it, but it hurt.

The last time was three years ago when I bought an AU 1916-D Mercury dime. You can find them, but fidning one that looks right is another issue. Anyway, I bought it and then sold it this April for almost 3x what I paid.

This has happened to me quite a few times with Early Copper Large Cents. A few times I just didn't have the money but stretched and did some creative financing to get the coins. These opportunities mostly occured in the 1993 to 2000 time frame and I am glad I bought the coins when I did. Even if they were now available, they would cost anywhere from two to five times the prices I paid back then.

I dont know that I've thought I'd never get another chance. I have thought that I'd never get another chance at it at that price.

I got tired of watching the SVDB go up about a year and a half ago and bought a PCGS 65BN. I hated to spend so much more than what they were going for just a year before, but felt that I'd watched them go up too long. I bought one and now it's nearing 2x what I paid for it.

I'm buying a 93-S Morgan this month. It's a VF30. About two years ago, I asked about a XF45. The guy wanted $4500 and I only wanted to pay $4200. I didnt get it. I'm paying over a $1000 more than that for the VF30. In the words of the great Homer Simpson, "Doh!"

If I was confident that I'd never get another chance and I wanted it bad enough, well, I'd sell the farm to make sure to get it.

    That's all I'm saying.

  • Been offered two like that this weekend !! Sucks when your short of coin money cause ya gotta pay the property taxes !!

One auction ends later today, I e-mailed the seller and made an offer to him for if the coin doesn't sell. If he accepts the offer I'll just have to dip into my emergency funds again !!

This is usually my primary criteria when buying.

I've done a fair amount of research and I am generally confident that I know just how likely another shot will be.

I have been wrong on a couple of occasions, both coins purchased a few years ago for what was at that time very strong money. I thought they were both rarer than they have turned out to be - though I'm still above water based on the overall increase of the market.

  • i thought that when i saw a trade dollar at my local dealer and i ALMOST bought it. i'd gone to the shop with the intention of getting either a seated liberty half, seated liberty dollar, or a trade and 1 each was available. the trade was a wee bit more than either of seated liberties but gosh it was gorgeous...i ended up getting the slh because i also got a few year holders and that put me at my limit for the visit.

anyhoo....i went back a couple of weeks ago and there were TWO trades for sale! i picked out some coins to finish my birthyear sets (stuff i KNEW i wouldn't find in change) and when they were totalled i realized i had enough for either of the 2 trades. i picked the best of the 2 and now she's MINE!

so....passing one time worked for me. it prolly won't work the next time, but i figure that if it doesn't it either wasn't meant to be or i'll find another one in better condition one day. either way, i'm not bugged.
