Birth of a Registry Collection (this is long)

This collection of MODERN circulation strike statehood quarters came about in a very innocent manner. I am a hoarder!!! No doubt about it. I have taken all of my change and put it in a jar nightly for years. Usually after Thanksgiving my family and I will take this jar and dump it out and sort out the coins and count it up, put it in rolls, and we usually have a nice little nest egg for our Christmas shopping.

In 1999 my change jar had a lot of different quarters in it! We thought these were really cool! So we started saving 10 or so each of these new quarters. I loved em. As a kid I remember having Whitman albums with pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and halves. My dad and I would go thru his change and fill in the empty holes. It was fun, but looking back I realize it gave me some moments with dad that are priceless.

The year 2000 brought us 5 new quarters and a new golden dollar. The Christmas fund was great this year. Our local Walmart was giving out the new "golden dollar" in a very aggressive way. Since I have kids we tend to shop there a lot. They have some good deals and lets face it, those little monsters are expensive!!! Needless to say, there was a lot of those gold toned coins in the change jar. We had a good chunk of change this year.

2001 was a bad year for us. I came down with a bad disease! I got hit hard with the coin bug!! I think this is a sexually transmitted disease by the way. I think I got it from a Mr Pat Chambers, and I can say this with some confidence. He is the only person I had sex with outside of my marriage. My wife is as faithful as they come, so I didn't get it there. Instead of the "Coin Vault" they should call it "Screwed in the Coin Vault." He got me for the 99,00, and 01 platinum, gold, and clad editions of the statehood quarters. Not only that, I bought 10 more sets of the gold editions and gave them away for Christmas presents to my freinds and relatives. They were a big hit for some reason. Oh yes, lets not forget about the overpriced roll of 02 silver eagles he sold me. Damn, I sure got suckered!!!

Well, I am no longer a normal person. I can say this with some confidence also!New years eve I'm on te computer, and I make my first purchase from the U.S. Mint. I get my first mint sets! Oh yeah, lets not forget, I also get the clad and silver proof sets for 01 also. Who the hell sits on a computer on new years ordering coins? Only people with this grave disease, that's who! But wait, it gets worse.

January 02 I find myself with an "Identity" at Ebay. And I am buying a little of everything! No kidding, I think I can buy and collect everything from lincoln cents, buff and jeffy nickels, merc and roosey dimes, and all quarters from 32 on! Not to mention, walkers, frankies, and kennedy halves, oh yeah, there are abunch of proof and mint sets sprinkled in, with a morgan and peace dollar here and there for variety. Doctor,Doctor, gimme the news!!! What has come over me???

Well it was bound to happen. The latter part of 02 I buy my first "slabbed" statehood quarter. Its PCGS of course. I also go to the pcgs website and get my first look at the Registry Sets and the message boards. There is this dim flicker of an "idea" in the back of my head but I can't quite get it to the concious part of my brain. But I know its there, I can feel it.

Christmas comes and goes. I get a nice bonus from work and, the bug being what it is, strikes again. 03 is the year I get in a little deeper. PCGS gets my money and I find myself pushing a little harder.
I now am a member of the pcgs "collectors club." That is the idea. I can make my own coins! Easier said than done. Well I do get very lucky with this. With my first submissions I get a ga-p in 67 and my very first self made 68 with the nc-p! Yep, I'm hopeless now! Oh yes, no doubt. The 03-d kennedy I get back in 68 helps keep the bug going. Now I find myself buying and selling coins at Ebay. And with what little profit I make I now buy an "upgrade" for my new "registry set." Oh, I forgot to mention that part. I'm sorry. I think it was the Wow! Pan Collection that did it. It was in the high end of the teens position, and I just knew I could do that.

Well, we are into 2003 now and the mint sets are released. I thought I could make my own coins, well, these didn't help. The 03 mint set were bad. The quality of the quarters were a big let down after the awesome 02's. But I am a stubborn guy, and just keep plugging along. I spend more money and the submissions don't make the grade, but what the hell, its fun!!! Right. Its expensive. But the bug just keeps me trying over and over. I now go and sell some of my nice modern commems to recoup some of the grading fees I have paid. No big deal. I really miss those babies!! But, my registry set is respectable.....

Now we are into 2004. I no longer can make upgrades for a couple of bucks. I go and sell off the rest of my commems, raw, and my raw proof silver eagles. But I did make some money. What do I do now?
Oh yeah, we renew my membership to pcgs, thats what!! And buy some 1000 coin mint bags. I did a respectable job in this area. Yep, made some 66 and 67 statehoods. But I failed with the new nickels.
The bags yielded only 64-5 grades. I don't have the eye for these, thats for sure. But I still tried. Those of you that have the eagle eyes and find these awesome strikes have my respect!!!

Well I have 10 04 mint sets waiting for me to cut up in the hope of making some new additions to my collection. I'm procrastinating here for some reason. I've had the sets for a couple of weeks now. Could it be my newest aquisition? Yep. Definately. I need to thank Mitchell Spivack for this. Its the crown jewel of my statehood collection! He helped me get a ga-d in 67. Its the most expensive quarter in the series. But what the heck, I am now sitting in the # 10 spot, which has been my goal since I registered my collection. That done, I now am sitting back, with a sense of satisfaction. I now have to regroup and make a new goal.

I need to thank a few people here for their help. Mitch of course, Mark De Lauro, Michael Sulinski, Jay Rudo, and Douglas Rall. There are others, like Odel Forte who supplied my ny-d and didn't put it up at Ebay. You guys are awesome, and your talent at spotting and making these beautiful quarters is something that isn't easily acquired.

Here is a link to my statehood collection.
One day when I get a decent camera and some time I would like to add pictures . I think its a big let down to see just the list of coins within a collection. But I also know this is very time consuming and people don't always have the means or the time to add these.

Oh yeah, 1 question. Is there a cure for this damn bug I have acquired????image I'm really worried about what its going to do to me in the future!!!!

RB: Congratulations on achieving your goal of a top 10 MS State Quarter set!! And, what a great story as well!! Of course, you aligning yourself with the likes of Mark, Michael, Jay & Doug - (4) of the best there are in the MS modern coin biz doesn't hurt either.

What lies ahead for you? Not sure. But, when I personally listed my 22nd active registry set the other day, I asked myself the very same question image

I did NOT want to know that.

  • Hey, this isn't literally a true statement!!!! He hosed me on the prices of the coins I bought there, I fell for his sales pitch image. Wow I probably shoulda worded this one different. I think I got his name wrong anyway. Isn't it Robert Chambers??? image I guess it wasn't too memorable an experience.
  • LindeDad Sometimes I wish I woulda stayed with 66's. If I had I probably would have a few other sets going by now (or at least I would still have my commems). Great set by the way!

RB what a great story. Sounds like you are hooked along with many others of us. As for the cure, making that next big coin will do, but it only last a little while and than the bug is back. Congratulation's on getting into the top 10

RB, Thanks!!! I'm pretty sure the Delaware P MS69 will be the last to go, I'll be sure to let you know when it's time. This coin is part of the reason I got the itch to start my Registry set. Sure wish I still had all of the other 99's in 68 I made. Now let's get looking for the next big coin.
  • Wonderful Story. Really enjoyed reading it. And I agree. Ain't no cure.

    Keep on trucking ...

Very nice post. I especially liked (and identified with) the part where you said "My dad and I would go thru his change and fill in the empty holes. It was fun, but looking back I realize it gave me some moments with dad that are priceless." I expect and hope that in some future year, my kids, your kids, and indeed, all our kids, can say the same thing. (Or else they can say "... gave me some moments with mom that are priceless!")

P.S.: Your collection is pretty sweet, too! image
