Why you can't trust those Heritage Images...

Picked this up resently in auction. Paid more than I wanted but sure was pleased when it arrived. The first image is from Heritage, the second one is my quick scan. It's just a tad brighter than the coin but not much. And, the colors are all there. I love getting surprises from Heritage.

Those don't even look like the same coin.

    Surprises are great aren't they?

The Heritage suprises are very pleasant. I am really at a loss for words why some people do not bid when the picture looks like the one you have shown. Heck you just know the coin will have some nice color.

Twenty Mercs should be here tomorrow. Big suprise day I hope. image

    Hi all,
Thanks to each of you. This has got to be the third or forth coin I've got from an Heritage auction where the coin was sooooo much better than their image. More Heritage for me.

The Heritage photo has some "generous" contrast added, IMO. The other photo looks a lot more normal. I had the same problem with a Buffalo I got from Greattoning on Ebay. It turned out to be a great coin but it certainly didn't look like his photo.

My Heritage surprises have been mixed--some good, some bad. Now, I only bi when I, or a trusted rep, has seen the coin.

Jom, I think you have it backwards. He is saying the coin looks betterthan than the heritage image. The better photo with more color is his photo.

You are right Bustman! I got it backwards. I should have known because now that you pointed it out that does look more like a Heritage photo.

I still think the bottom photo has too much contrast. image

No problem. Most folks will see the photo's and say No Way. Of course the loyal followers will keep bidding on the bad looking coins. image

JOM if you jump back in here I am still trying to get a real good photo of the 26D. Man thats a tough coin to photograph. image

    Very nice coin!image
  • Jim - gorgeous coin! Did they not give that coin FB designation? If so - was it because it was graded before the designation came into effect or is it because it doesn't make it on the top bands?

    Either way -very pretty!

    Frank,
No FB designation on the coin. I don't think it would make it (but, I'm no expert) since the bands don't appear to be fully separated.

    jom,
I scanned the coin and made no corrections what-so-ever...other than angled it slightly. We'll faught the scanner.

    TO ALL,
Thanks for the nice comments. I was surprised on it's arrival. I've found (from coins I've purchased) Heritage takes their images from stright on and that does not always reflect the color on some coins.
