Morgan toning

What do you guys think about this toning..it looks pretty NT. What im wondering is...the coin looks scanned... and when i scan a toned coin, the dark/gree blue always turns black too. Does this coin have any chance of being alot prettier in hand, or do you think the picture is pretty accurate of the color?

  • Looks to me like the black is real, not sure though.

I bet it looks nice in person -- IF the luster is there.
  • I think it will look better in person as well, but those dark areas may still be pretty dark. If held at an angle I am sure the coin would be more attractive. I agree about the luster though......that's going to be the deciding factor here.

This seller either doesn't know what he is talking about, or is lying. That is not what Wayte Raymond toning looks like. If it is NT, it is bag toning. I can't really be certain with a scan.

Agreed, and if you look at all the other Morgans he has..... they seem to have the same obv pattern (and colors) as the rev. HMMMMMM

Without seeing them in the flesh, it's very difficult to discern NT from AT - But when you look at the others listed by the same seller, they seem to have a heavy chemical/heat look to them - JMHO

Here is what Wayte Raymond toning really looks like:

  • I would run, not walk away from those auctions. After looking through all of the Morgan's he is selling I am convinced that it's AT. Look at the 1890-S obverse and then look at the 1898 he is selling...it's the same obverse so who knows what the actual coin looks like, but the date reads 1890 if you look....image

It looks AT to me.The colors look weird, and they dont seem to blend very well.

The toning on that one looks real to me, but may be overly dark for my tastes. The seller has another one of those morgans that I looked at earlier that he completely overgraded- it looked completely AU, and he's still pushing it as a near gem.... Perhaps he's a coin guy that doesn't really know coins that well......
