Slab collectors . . . here is an uncommon find

Here is an interesting slab for your collection. I have seen these a few times and they are pretty neat. Produced to sell proof Krugerrands (all sizes), they were one of the first, if not THE first, slabs. Since I do not have my slab book with me, I can't relay any of the info. But I can tell you that each of the Krugerrand sizes had their own size case (and yes, the 1/10 oz is really cute!). The larger pieces are hand-labeled and graded on a . . . get this . . . scale that goes to 105! Yes, that's 105! So a grade of 97 ain't so grand.

You do not see these that often and occasionally they come with custom fit small leatherette display boxes. Regarding the price . . . you should be able to pick them up at shows for a modest premium above gold since so few people collect proof Krugerrands. Thus the $550 price tag on this one is a bit strong. Still a neat piece, however.

You won't find that in the Slab book. I didn't run across that company until after the book came out. Lane is right that it may be the earliest slab company. The slab pictured in the auction is the second variety of holder that they produced. I have documents from the company that show their first variety pictured in a sale from 1975 so the holder in the eBay action has to date after that. I don't think they are still in business.

Lane are you saying that the smaller denominations used smaller sized slabs as well? That would be interesting and something I didn't know. (Al I have ever seen have been one oz pieces.)

Yes, there are four different sizes, one for each of the denominations. The 1/2 oz and 1 oz pieces are graded with a serial number while the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz only have a serial number.

  • I have 10 of the silver proof 1/10oz, not slabbed, seem to be a 1982 commemorative kreugerrand. Anyone have any idea of their value?

    Thank you,
