Funeral for a friend

I felt a viewing would be appropriate before I lay the poor girl to rest. RIP

Born: 1837
Died: 2004

Maybe she was dipped
Or cleaned with a rag
Whatever it was
She got the bag

I certainly hope he doesn't send it to NTC--even for pleasure, why give business to those reputed for grading problem coins and overgrading coins (and I've seen plenty of theirs first-hand). Then again, it's in an unsealed flip, so there's no cracking needed...

ok wait up. i thought NTC was on the good list of people to send coins too

i thought it was PCGS, NTC and another company
and stay away from ICG, ASA, and i even heard ANACS ( which i thought was on the good list) . is there a new list of people i should be sending coins to for grading

  • atarian, do you work for ntc ? image

As we all know, the "good" slabs are PCGS, NGC, ANACS
The "others" are NTC, PCI, ICG, SEGS, ACG, etc.

    You need to re-indoctrinated.

ANACS would slab the coin, note the cleaning, and give a net grade.
I think NCS (part of NGC) would slab it, give it a details grade, and note the cleaning.

maybe i was thinking ngc. i knew there was a good one starting with N. anyway. wouldnt it be a good idea to send it to one other higher grade coin company if you feel this grade was misgraded. im sure they arent perfect you know.

  • Don't completely dismiss SEGS though, I count ICG and SEGS as being 2nd Tier grading services, not the best, but certainly not the worst. SEGS is still a good alternative for problem coins, and if I remember right, they are pretty good with attributions. I know that they attribute Capped Bust Half-Dimes by the LM and Valentine numbers on the slab. And I'd suspect they do the same for any other series that has a standard reference...

Hell, I'd be happy to buy that thing and put it in my Dansco type album.

She is beautiful, even in repose.

or give it to a seasoned kid image. There are probably some hairlines you'll see in stronger light (incandescent)... with that color, I'd say cleaned LONG ago (since they said cleaned--I'd be inclined to see the image and go original).

    What LanLord and LincolnCentMan said.

And, as Catch22 mentioned, that song is now in my head.

Thanks to everyone who liked my coin. As far as to my comment about laying her to rest I was being sarcastic about the bodybag. image There doesn't appear to be any hairlines and the coin is actually darker than the image depicts. As Jeremy stated if it was dipped it was a LONG time ago. I'm thinking of sending it to Anacs and see what their opinion is. I have an 1840 SL Seated Liberty half dollar that has noticeable hairlines from wiping and Anacs graded it AU55 with no net grade so I'm curious to see how they would grade this one. Some forum members suggested doing an album type set and I think that is a great idea and it would definately look good in one.

    Thanks,
    Don

I agree, try it at ANACS, and see what their opinion is. IMO most coins of that era are cleaned (even the one's in PCGS slabs).

It’s been my experience that these 1837 and ’38 half dollars tend to come somewhat dark and dull. I had an 1837 in a PCGS MS-61 holder that had all the sharpness, but very little luster. The 1838 that is pictured below has a bit more luster, but is still rather dark although there is a brighter spot above the eagle’s head. This piece is in a PCGS MS-62 holder.

It’s hard to tell from a scan what might be wrong with your coin. Perhaps it’s a combination of too much dipping and some AT. I don’t know. If it’s not AT it would have killed PCGS to put the coin in an AU holder rather than giving it a BB. I’ve seen worse things in holders.
