So... how "undergraded" are old green holdered morgan and peace dollars?

My dad has aboout 10 common dates in these old holders. Most say ms63 but they all look like "modern" 65's to me. Do any of you know how often these were "undergraded" and how many points do they usually go up on a resubmission?

(Yes, I realize they weren't really undergraded...grading changes over time.)

Thanks!!!!

    generally, one point.

some are, some aren't, though, and some might be OVER graded.

There are no hard and fast rules about Green PCGS labels and undergrading.

ON AVERAGE PCGS graded coins in the larger holders (not rattlers) with green labels tend to be more conservatively graded BUT NOT ALL OF THEM ARE!!!! I've seen overgraded coins in the Green label holders as well.

Sometimes it's just a matter of the coin being nice for the grade, and a crack-out is not in order. (i.e. the chances are small that you would get an upgrade.) At other times it's worth a try.

At any rate you need to know how to grade to spot the conservatively grade green label coins. Just buying coins in those labels is NOT enough.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  • Most are at the high end of the current grade standards or are capable of upgrading a point. It's hard to state % because most have already been upgraded and lot of crap is left. The other factor is the cost benefit analysis. Common dates in 63 aren't worth it and 64 usually aren't worth the cost of an upgrade unless you're SURE it will happen.
    Morgan

    63 $35
    64 $47
65 $120 (they are sellng on ebay around 100)

so if you send in 3 64s and ony one ups the you spent $45 to turn 47 into 100 ($53). Was it worth it?

I have had some good success with upgrades but generally won't try unless I have an upside 3X the downside, after the cost of the reslab.

BTW.. If you look on ebay and the dealer says "old slab, easy upgrade" you can be sure he knows it won't"

They aren't. Evaluate by coin and not by the era of the holder. I have seen rattlers and green labels overgraded, undergraded, and right on.

Read this thread from the Registry Forum, which suggests that current grading may be as tight if not tighter than in the Old Green Holder days, including the days of the rattlers. Seens that the guys who used to make their living playing the crack-out game are finding it has become a really tough game to play.
