1803 Bust Half question

I saw this auction and I realized that I have the same coin in a little better condition but with a rim ding in the SAME EXACT place and only affecting the overse just like this coin! The question is this, coin production was very manual in 1803 and was there a production run when a tool may have been used to free the coin from the press that created these rim dings or is it a coincidence?1803 Half Dollar auction

This is the 1803 O.104 small 3, I have seen dozens in shows and auction catalogs without a similar ding, probably coincidence. I have not seen any similar dings on 1803 Obverse 1 large 3 used on 101, 102, and 103. But I have noticed a very small rim cud under the 8 on several high grade examples of Obverse 1. The Reverse of 1803 103 and 104 was also used on 1805 O.112, where the top eventually broke off into a large rim cud.

The coin looks more F15 than VF/XF, some sucker has bid on it.

Edit, make that F12 because of the ding.

Yes, I agree. This 1803 half needs a bit of a tail wind to hit VF-20. Giving it the VF-EF grade is just another example of "grade-flation."

  • Thanks for the infor NYSOTO. My half is a "large 3" O-103 VF20/25 (net to include the ding) with a steel grey color. I got excited when I saw a same sized ding on the same part of the coin that I thought it was worth a post. Thanks again.
