Are you interested in Lance Armstrong slabs?

Certainly bound to be less controversial than the Lynch slabs. I'm still not very interested in having one of these.

Maybe(a very weak maybe!) one of the Monnaie de Paris coins, but certainly not

<< <i>a United States coin struck during one of the years Armstrong won his six consecutive Tour de France races, 1999 to 2004 >>

I guess I'm just not into these signature slabs, especially the farther removed the subjects get from the coins themselves. I don't get it. If I wanted a Lance Armstrong autograph, I think I'd probably just get an autographed picture.

  • No thanks. I love slabs but that is stretching it too far.

  • Are they making these? Do they include a sweat-stained label (with actual
    sweat from the race)?

I suppose State Quarters™ would qualify!

Actually, I was thinking that they should slab platinum eagles in these Lance Armstrong slabs.

They have slabbed gold dust before. Now, slabbing sweat would be kind of cool.

I think I'd be more likely to buy some certified sweat!

They'll probably only use the Texas quarter.

I'm a big Lance Armstrong fan, but what does he have to do with coins?

I'm not really sure how winning the Tour De France six times makes him an "American Hero". I guess next we'll get autographed "American Hero" slabs for every athelete that wins a medal at the Olympics.

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
  • They are cutting up Lance and slabbing him now? image I hope they freeze dry him first. Sure would be a mess. No wonder he said he wasn't competing next year.

This is just getting ridiculous. When will it end???

Why does PCGS feel the need to put out this trash??? I'll bet we'll see these for sale forever. 10,000 of them -- do 10,000 American's know who Lance Armstrong is??? Perhaps they'll be marketed in France, where they really get into the Tour.

Not to take anything from Lance Armstrong -- his accomplishment is deserving of respect and admiration -- but American Hero status???

BTW -- Didn't this guy ditch his wife, who helped him through his cancer, for some celebrity? Nice hero.

It's gimmicky, but I would actually be interested in owning one. I'm a huge Lance Armstrong fan...he's a hero as far as I'm concerned.

  • No, but how about a Monica Blowinsky slab!!! That's something collectors could really suck-up to!!

Seriously, I think these "designer" slabs are a bunch of hokey--but to each his (or her) own!!

Nah, not really. How about a racing bike autographed by Q. David Bowers?

  • Lance Armstrong is arguably the greatest athlete who has ever lived - PERIOD! Anyone who is a cyclist knows that even the most simple stage at the Tour De France requires amazing conditioning and skill.

Armstrong has overcome many personal challenges and against all odds has done the IMPOSSIBLE by winning the Tour an amazing SIX times DESPITE the seemingly insurmountable challenges that came his way. He has achieved all of his success by GOD's Grace, who has given Armstrong the ability to endure the intense training, the massive development and the awesome personal character that is required to have done what Armstrong has done.

Armstrong's story is what a true champion is made of. Most other athletic champions have NOT endured and overcome the obstacles that Armstrong has. While I usually do not go for "celebrity" slabs, I certainly support this one given the truely unique nature and circumstances surrounding this OUTSTANDING athlete. He is America's very best athlete. image matteproof

I agree 100% with this. I also agree this is a VERY tacky move on PCGS's part.
Stick with coins, guys. What's next? Velvet Elvis slabs?

I have to agree with Matteproof. I am a huge Lance Armstrong fan. I also agree he is the greatest athlete ever. He is not only inspiring to fans of cycling but to cancer survivors everywhere. He is also a huge fund raiser for cancer research with his own charity the Lance Foundation. I do think he is a HERO. I would be happy to own this. However, it would be for his signature and whatever coin would just be an extra.

"Now, what's all this talk about Lance Armstrong's abs?"

  • << <i> I'm not really sure how winning the Tour De France six times makes him an "American Hero". >>

image Are you serious ? image

    First, He's an American
Second, He wins the most grueling Cycling event in the world, 6 times in a row, more than anyone else so far.
Third, He does it against the most experienced and atheletic riders the rest of the world has to offer.
Fourth, He does this as an American, on an American Team. Sponsored by an American icon, The U.S. Postal Service.

Lance Armstrong is arguably the finest Athlete in the world today. The Tour 'de France is not some 'round the block' bicycle race that just anyone can compete in.

Why do some people feel they have to bash everything that a company decides to do with it's business??
If David Hall chooses to have a Signature Series slab set then who's business is it of ours !??
If you don't like it, don't buy it . image

I personally think it's a cool idea. I make my own decisions as to which Sig i choose to purchase.

  • I am in awe of what Lance Armstrong has been able to accomplish as a cancer survivor. The fact that he can COMPETE in the Tour de France, let alone win 6 in a row is heroic enough for me. However, no offense to Mr. Armstrong here, but he has as much to do with coins as my air conditioning service technician or my garbage collector.

In my opinion, including autographs of American heroes who have nothing to do with numismatics only cheapens PCGS and is just another reason why they won't get my business.

I mean, Jesus... what's next? David Hasselhoff slabs?

    You're lame, PCGS. Totally LAME!

I have no interest in Lance Armstrong slabs. I respect what he accomplished but I don't respect the man.

Perhaps PCGS can slab those silver round -- Playboy coins with the pics of the topless "Playmate of the Month" on them and have the girls sign those slabs. (page 50, upper left corner of the 7/19 CoinWorld)

Now that would defintely get Tonelover's new designation --- FPN (you had to read the other thread to understand)

But Hey, I hit two threads in one.

And I'd bet more guys would buy that than the Lance Armstrong coin!!!!!!

    image

The rounds sold in CoinWorld are actually topless women -- but I'm sure you get the point.

  • Hi all. Tootawl you said; "I'd rather see a Neil Armstrong coin......with Buzz Aldrin on the reverse." Why? Do you think these guys really went to the moon? image

Hi merysu. You said; "No, and "He has achieved all of his success by GOD's Grace". Interesting since he is an atheist. And leaving the wife/mother of his children, I can't be a fan. -mark- GOD's Grace works equally upon atheists as it does upon believers (what was any believer before he became a believer?). Would you agree that it was by GOD's Grace that Lance Armstrong beat cancer? Surely you do not credit his recovery to mere medicine alone. As for leaving his wife, divorce is always an exceedingly unpleasant thing and should evoke compassion rather than scorn from others. My understanding is that his wife wanted the divorce and that Armstrong tried desperately to reconcile but she would not. Either way, GOD's Grace is sufficient to cover any sin, including divorce (Rom. 5: 20). Indeed, Armstrong said that he might not compete in next years Tour because he wants to spend more time with his kids. Sounds like a good dad to me.

Hi nwcs. You said; "I have no interest in Lance Armstrong slabs. I respect what he accomplished but I don't respect the man." Why?

I agree with all who recognize that Lance Armstrong is a truly amazing athlete - even if "celebrity" slabs are generally a numismatic bummer. matteproof
