Here's why the AU grade is so very cool (Pilgrim half)

At the CO Springs Coin Show, I was able to pick this coin up at less than 50% MS63 sheet since there's some rub present--still has great lustre, but costs MUCH less... plus, the design is awesome

I even got an additional $3 off so I could give the guy two singles so he could buy a soda

I just placed it in my type set...

I actually hadn't seen a close-up of one of those. That's a pretty neat coin.

AU can be a real money-saver when you're collecting for joy.

Nowadays you really have to search hard for an AU like that. Most have already been cherry-picked and reslabbed as MS63s or whatever. "Maxed out" as it were.

NICE! As a hobby collector on a narrow budget, I happen to think AU is a great field of opportunity, and AU58 just might be the best thing ever... I've been looking for a pilgrim just like yours for a while. I unloaded the three cleaned ones I'd had since I was ten years old last winter ($32 a pop, which just underscores what a great thing AU is when you can get a coin like yours for just 20 bucks more than my old harshly scrubbed ones) and I've been looking for one like that. Up here in the boonies it's the internet or nothing, though, and the one stab I took at one ("MS60") on ebay brought one just as ugly & hairlined as the ones I sold. Needless to say it got sent back. Anyway, that's a lovely coin. Congrats.

hey Jeremy

i picked up a PCGS MS62 about 2 months ago for $56 on eBay. the picture was really crappy, that probably kept bidders low.

i notice that the reverse die crack on your coin has progressed from the die state when my coin was struck. though mine is rim toned, if glassed there is evidence of polish where they worked on the crack. i'd have to assume that it advanced to a giant cud or just shattered the die completely.
